and i looked under the hood and the thing had a 4 cylinder diesel engine that looked a lot like a cummins. same exact valve covers. and the model said it was a komatsu. could it really be a cummins with a komatsu tag? thanks. scott.
Was watching the drilling rig bore holes for pilings at our plant today. What did I see but our friendly 5. 9 chuggin away for the power unit. It just was that ugly tannish creme color instead of the nice grey.
I can second what LSMITH said. We used to machine some of Cummins/Consolidated Diesel Company's engine parts and if I remember correctly there was talk of a joint venture between Cummins and Komatsu. The Supplier Quality guys were talking to us one day about how strict the Quality requirements were from Komatsu. I believe Komatsu just rebadged the engine and sold it in their units.
Komatsu's plant in the US is across the river from Cat's plant in Peoria, Ill. They must be using Cummins to compete w/ Cat. Check-out Komatsu's site www.Komatsu.com and it will tell every brand of engine they use.
There was one of their 150 ton haul trucks going up hwy 16 a couple years back, it had a KT 2300 Cummins in it. V-12 2300 CI. One massive engine.
Komatsu Cummins Engine Co has manufactured diesel engines in Japan and Chile since 1993. It's a 50/50 joint venture, Komatsu makes them with Cummins' name on them. I read where Komatsu will be taking over the manufacture of all 4 cylinder Cummins engines and smaller this year.
