I spray my engine while it is cold w/Castrol superclean and hose it off with a garden hose. you can use any degreaser that you want. don't use pressurized water or you will force water where you don't want it.

I use a pressure washer and turn the pressure down a bit. Cold engine for sure and I use plastic bags on things I don't want to get wet. Never had a problem and sure cleans the engine.

I use a pressure washer once a month. I hit it lite to dampen it up and then spray it down with Simple Green and let it sit for 5 minutes. Then start it up to an idle and rinse it down to where I don't see any suds or soap. Been using this method for 25 years and never had a problem on any of my rigs. Trick is to keep it clean all the time and not let the dirt work into it too long. ;)

I'm with Scrappy - good degreaser and no pressure. Now I just use the same soap and water I use on the wheel wells every time I wash the truck. I do put a rag over the alternator to keep from spraying water directly in it. Don't forget to get the bottom side of the hood, too. I tend to forget that once in a while.

I use the pressure washer at work. Even though it puts out 4k psi @ 4gpm, the wand can be adjusted low enough, that it is like a garden hose. We havea (stand alone) HOT water heater that is connected by just the hoses to and from it. Don't need any degreaser with it. It is VERY hot.

With exception to air filters, we don't cover any thing up. No problems at all. :)

I finally did it after 2 years just a couple months ago. I used Simple Green and a garden hose. Didn't cover anything up, and to be honest I wasn't particularly cautious with the water spray. No problems at all. Very good results. Do it when the engine is cold.
