I have noticed the last couple of weeks that off the line power has dropped. I had clicked the AFC wheel about 20 clicks about 3 weeks ago and it seemed to have made a great improvement over stock. Now this started to happen. I was wondering if the Waste Gate is having problems. I checked the hose from the AFC fitting to the waste gate and it seems to be fine and no leaks that I could find.
It seems slower on start off and to get the power to come in you have to be in the upper rpms not in the mid rpms like it use to. Even in 4th it doesn't grab it and run like it use to. There is no miss's or bad idle.
I have a good coat of dirt on the K&N filter(PSA) and I was wondering if with the filter dirty that its just starving for air. I am going to clean it this weekend and see if that makes a difference.
Should I be able to move the rod that goes to the turbo when the engine is off. If you are suppose to, then there is a probem because this one is solid, I can't move it either way. .

Thanks
Rick

Rick,I doubt if your air filter is the problem, especially this time of year with little dust. Unless you are doing some heavy duty offroading it's best not to service a K&N more than every 50k miles, they actually filter better when dirty.
What's your boost gauge reading? If it is reading low and the hose is intact it could be the wastegate is stuck open. This sometimes happens due to carbon buildup. Just try wiggling it back and forth and see how it feels, you can usually break it free. If you have a source of compressed air you can put pressure to the wastegate and see if it operates, just don't exceed 30 psi or you can blow out the actuator diaphragm.
You could've also got a bad load of fuel and your fuel filter is clogged,

I am ready for a re-fuel tomorrow so we will see if that makes a difference. I was wondering about the lift pump. But it has been about a week since I got on it real hard thru the gears. It seems to run better when I get a little aggressive with it now and again. I do some city driving and about the same highway(below 60). What this thing really needs is a good hard pull with my 5th wheel behind it, lets say 4000 miles worth of I40!!!

Rick,or you could put a bunch of weight in the back and head up the Tule River to Camp Nelson, that should blow it out. Use some fuel additive that cleans injectors also.

Have you ever changed the pre-filter? I thought about that also but I did want to do that until I had a new o ring on hand incase I broke the old one. Sounds like you know the area where I live. . Didn't you say at one time you lived in Porterville?

Rick, grew up in P'ville, haven't been back in 15 years. Tule River up past Springville was my favorite place to hang out. Population went from 6000 to 40,000,probably much more by now. Did you know that the little town of Exeter used to have the highest per capita population of millionares in the US?Go figure.

As long as you install the O-ring correctly you won't have a problem reusing it,if it doesn't want to stay put coat it with a little grease to make it stick. I check my heater screen once a year, about 30k miles,it's always been spotless, but it only takes one tank of dirty fuel to change that. Talked to a fellow recently who's heater screen hadn't been maintained,it got so clogged that it collapsed the screen, all the crud got sucked into the lift pump and ruined it. He was only getting 12 mpg before it happened. Guess that says it's something to be checked. There is also a screen in the fuel tank module,it is rather large and the sloshing of fuel in the tank will keep it clean. You have to drop the tank or lift the bed to get at it so I wouldn't mess with it unless you find lots of crud on the heater screen. If you install a fuel pressure gauge you can probably get by without checking the heater screen, might pay for itself in the saved hassle. I would still check the heater screen before installing a gauge though.

Could you tell me if my 96 DC has the pre screen or the fuel heater?I'll agree with you the fuel filter and some injecter cleaner will help with the above problem.
Thanks Tim

There must not be much wrong, I just filled up this morning and the mileage figured out to 21. 97 mpg. This also includes about 25% city driving and the rest is highway(less than 60 mph). I think it needs to be limbered up a little. Come April 28th she going to get here excercise to the tune of a round trip the Arkansas from Ca. pulling a 25' 5th wheel.
It must be all in my mind(must be lonely up there) that it was dropping power, its just sooted up on the injectors. .

Thanks
Rick

Wow, so it wasn't in my head. I just hauled my Jeep on a trailer up I80 to Emigrant Gap this past weekend (70mph up hills with power to spare is just so nice), after I got back and the truck was unloaded, it seemed to have a bit more pep and I got a bit better mileage. Must've blown a lot of carbon and crap out. #ad

Harvy:
That AFC wheel plays a bigger part than you may think on low end. You can adjust it to cut off the power, almost. Play with it to get the best response and the lest amount of smoke possible. There is a happy median to be found.
