Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) wastegate actuator vs 16cm housing

the wastegate actuator went bad on my stock turbo , I can replace it or install a 16cm housing I have on the shelf , I was happy with what the stock one was doing it's been running about 35lbs boast & not much smoke , what results will I get with the larger housing as far as heat , lag , smoke , I use the truck for regular driving and pulling a camper with a boat behind the camper , what experience have everyone had with this larger housing , any advice ect ?

Dick, if you have gauges go ahead and block the wastegate shut and see how that works. If your boost runs past the upper 30s or EGTs are too high then I'd put a 16 on it. It'll be a little laggier but it should help EGTs a bit, maybe 75-100F approx.

I ran the 16 for a long time with the stock 35. Still spooled good, lag was no problem for me. Looks like our set up is similar.

thanks , guess I will try out the 16 , does anyone know if the down pipe fastens to the housing or would I need an adapter of sorts between the two ?

Downpipe matches up fine except I think you might have to bring your exhaust forward slightly if I remember right, since the housing is a little narrower or something without the wastegate.

thanks , can the exhause housing be removed while the turbo is mounted on the exhaust manifold or ?

Nope, the housing is what is mounted to the manifold. All else fits ok.

finally raised the hood , guess the turbo has to come off along with exhaust , muffler is rusted anyway , I just don't like the bottom nuts on the manifold , anyone have a idea's how to make it easier to remove them

Try PB Blaster. I seem to have great results using it.

I used a box end combo wrench so that I could use a ratchet on the end not on the bolt. It worked great to get those 2 bolts under the turbo. I believe the wrench was 1/2 on one end and 9/16 on the other. Used a 1/2 ratchet. Hope that helps. Definately hit them with some type of penetrating oil first.
