Did the first tow a few days ago and was bugged having to drop out of O. D. then downshift again going up a 7 percent grade.

Mines a stock '95 3500 w/3. 54s.

So today was diagnosis day. I decided to check the wastegate function. Put 20 p. s. i. to the wastegate actuator to find that air passes through the diaphragm! The book says to adjust the wastegate apply 19. 3 p. s. i. to the actuator and the rod should travel . 013-. 050"... ... mine does not move. So I know I gotta replace the actuator, my question is what would an always closed wastegate do to a STOCK trucks performance?

The boost maxs out at 22 and seems to come on when needed. . (I think). but how could it if not "controlled"?

Maybe a good excuse for a Banks "Git Kit".

'956Wheel,

The function of the wastegate is to allow exhaust gases by- pass the turbine on the exhaust side of the turbo so boost is kept at reasonable numbers. They do this so damage to engine or turbo will not occur.

The engine should be able to take 30 psi with no problem.

The wastegate also allows for a turbo with a smaller condensing (or compression) tube which gives quicker build up and larger numbers at low rpm. But has the possibilty to give to much boost at higher rpms)

Have you tried moving the gate with the rod by hand?

Try cleaning rod with cleaner if you can't move by hand.

If you are getting max 22 psi (boost) nothing to worry about. The wastegate is usually set to allow by-pass at 18 to 20 psi.

I will have to look at book to see what is considered opened or closed.

But a closed gate would seem to be allowing all exhaust go to turbo while an open one would be allowing some/most exhaust to by-pass turbo.

I think your problem lies in not enough fuel. What was your egts when you had to down shift? What was your boost reading?

MM, I just don't think pressure from the turbo (compressor) should pass through the diaphragm, that is my concern. I will see if the rod is free to move, however the actuator will not be able to move the wastegate if it cannot hold pressure.

Mike

I'll agree with that. But if your boost is only maxing out at 22 psi you have nothing to worry about unless you start adding fuel or find fuel supply problem.

If it makes you feel better knowing you can't cook anything replace actuator, I would.

Maybe a needle through the diaphram will work instead of an elbow or 22 casing to keep the wastegate from opening for all of those low budget bombers out there.

Took out the actuator-wastegate moves free. Put back the actuator. (lost that e-clip) said a few words and found one in an old box of "junk"... yes, just like Dad said "we'll need that someday!"

I'm thinking about that "Git Kit", its a plate plus a "big head" actuator by Banks... . does anyone out there use one? Or something like it? Does Piers have a set-up like that?

My '95 has a 16 cc exhaust side turbo with no wastegate and does just fine. It will easily hit 30 psi and more and has no low end problems. Cruise at 72 mph is about 4-6 psi on flatland.

Blake

Blake. Tell me more about this turbo! Where did ya get it? Are you gettin all that H. P. + Torque off that turbo ? Did ya change out the injectors? How much did it hurt?

My '95 is a "daily driver" but will be towing maybe 12 or so times a year.

It says N. E. Ohio on your sig... I work with a guy from Ashtabula (sp). Iv'e seen pics... looks nice but he says it snows too much!

Hello '956Wheel,

The previous owner of my truck had all the work done at Diesel Injection of PittsburghDiesel Injection of Pittsburgh. It included a larger - 16 cm - exhaust housing for the turbo without waste gate, bigger injectors, and a plate in the pump. Today they use the TST plate, but when they did mine a couple years ago they used a Bosch plate with similar results. The whole system they put on my truck is explained at http://www.dieselinjection.net/B&C.html and a good explaination about everything is at http://www.dieselinjection.net/booklet.html .

I've been very happy with my truck and its power. It will really throw you back in the seat when the converter locks up while accelerating and will slip the tires going uphill at 70 mph when the boost hits 30 psi.

I get between 16 and 20 mpg depending on driving conditions, but it's generally up over 18 mpg on the freeway at 72 mph with no trailer. 1900 rpm @ 72 mpg (on gps).

Blake

I WISH I was getting 72 mpg!!!! I meant 72 mph of course.

Oh, about Ashtabula... I'm about 25 miles SW of there. Yes we do get a nice amount of snow - sometimes 200 inches over the winter - I like it alot, but I've grown up with it. Most complain, but they keep on moving into our area.
