Hey guys:

My truck is only building about 18# of boost and temps will climb to about 1200* pre turbo. I have 85 horse Superchips programmer on it with new air filter and straight exhaust. I'm about to add 100 horse injectors but am wanting to get a little more air to it. What has to be done to bypass/remove wastegate on this model truck. I know guys with the earlier 24 valves plugged the line but these are steel and it looks as if they do not come apart. What do I have to do?

Thanks,

John

turbo

If you have a auto trans you probly have a HY35 turbo with a 9CM exhaust housing... . get rid of that thing all of it and at the bare minimum go to something like a PDR HX 35 with a 12 cm housing. The modified HX will flow more air and withstand a little more abuse, and with the 12 cm housing that will lower your EGT's at least 100 maybe even 200 degrees. When my 02 was brand new that was the very firt mod it did right after guages. The PDR spooled up as quick as stock and I lowered my EGT's alot.

you can get a few more psi out of that turbo(24psi i think its efficiency range tops out) with a J hook(if its an auto)

if you intend to keep the superchip you're gonna need some way to fool the computers MAP sensor(ADD,boost fooler, etc. ) so it doesnt de-fuel from over-boost

The j-hook is the fastest/ cheapest mod to add a little boost. But the HY can overboost easily.

If you don't want to spend much money, A used HX35 will be a step up. You need the exhaust housing as well. And the next step would be the PDR35.

It all depends on what you want to do. But with those sticks and who knows what else, you better start looking for a turbo.

Don't forget, that transmission is gonna get cooked in short order with the additional power.

j,

I used a turn buckle from the local hardware store. You can do a search and find a post with pictures of how to do it. Real simple and cheap, but you will have to get a boost fooler. I could push 30psi out of my hy, but wasn't to effective after 25. Than I said screw it and bought my phat shaft 62 :D . Getting into an hx35 would definatley help and would be cheaper than a new turbo. Good luck!

My 01 Auto Has An Adjustable Wastegate Just Screw The Wastegate Lever In Or Out Cant Remember For Sure. With My Blue Chip Apb Box That Little Turbo Has Seen 40+ Pounds Numerous Times. Actually Had A 35# Gauge When It Was Stock After Adding The Box It Buried The Gauge So I Went With A 60# Gauge. Truck And Original Turbo Has 155,000 Miles On It. Just My 2 Cents.

The j-hook is the fastest/ cheapest mod to add a little boost.

Not true... . The cheapest way is to plug the black hard line with a . 22 short rifle shell. :D If you want you can drill a tiny hole in it so the wastegate still functions. When I did this I got my HY35 to 45psi and my EGT's to 1500 deg. Running that little turbo over 26# is just bad and will not help you at all. I would say with 100 hp injectors and super chips programer you will need more than an HX35, try a 40 or a hybird. You are also going to need a clutch or TC/VB, a better fuel pump and a better intake.

Do a search for 22 shell and you should find some posts.

Guys:

What do I need to know about an HX-40. Do you have a Part # for an off the shelf out of the box Holset HX-40 with a 16 cm exhaust housing? The Cummins dealers around here wont look anything up without an engine model, serial#, and CPL.

As for my exhaust, when I move from a 35 to a 40 I have to install a 4" downpipe, can I utilize my original exhaust or is it time to swap to a larger exhaust also? I saw where Bully Dog makes a sweet 6" system, I love the sound of semi's :D

Thanks for all who posted!

John

one thing you might want to consider is a different chip. the superchips is for stock vehicals, we had troubles in a friends truck with the superchips and jammer 5 (150 hp), but i have another friend with the superchips and a set of 85 horse injector and it seems to be fine. just some expiriences i have seen, your may be fine.

j,

be careful going to a 16cm exhaust housing. Although I don't have one I was told that with the automatics it will be too laggy. I have industrial injections phat shaft 62 turbo with a 12cm exhaust housing and if I turn the chip off, it lags a bit, but I also don't have injectors :{ so you might be alright. I'm not sure on the part #'s etc for the 40 but do a search or I'm sure someone will chime in. I would upgrade the exhaust while your changing the downpipe. If for nothing else... ... a sweeter sound. Check out the mbrp :) I have the duals and they sound awesome(deep and throaty, big rig turbo whistlin). I think 6" might be overkill, but all in personal preference. If you love the big rigs than why not go stacks Oo. They look gooooood!

There are about 40 different part numbers for the HX40. Knowing which one to pick is the problem. I would suggest buying from one of the aftermarket shops, like Piers, so you get the one that is right for our trucks

Come on guys. I need more input on the stock style HX 40. Is the smallest exhaust housing #16? What part # will give me the smallest exhaust housing as well as compressor housing with wastegate and bolt right on the truck?

Thanks

Seems to me the HX 40mis a little to big for what you're doing. The HX 35 with a 12 or 14 cm housing would spool better. I'm using a DZ 35-40 hybrid & it's plenty with my Bombs.
