I installed this for when i'm towing . if i'm running around town or the highway no load I have it open ( max psi 20lb ) when i'm towing our 5th wheel and need that extra hill holding grunt its closed ( max psi 26lb ) I find this a cleaner alternative to just blocking it off

Get daring and run that valve in-cab! That way you can adjust it on the fly... ... for blowing off DuraCracks and PowerJokes, etc... .

That's the way I'm gonna have mine soon... .

my wastegate is not blocked and I already get 39 or 40 pounds of boost. I am confused on why I get this, I have heard this is high considering my upgrades (refer to sig). I have been told blocking the wastegate will not really make a defference for me considering the boost I am making. however I have already been condsidering doing something like what pzicha did. PZicha where did you find the valve you used?

dcash, it could be your wastegate is already accidentally blocked off due to melted/kinked control tubing or a carbon stuck wastegate. It happens.

most hardware stores or any nut and bolt store , Its just a brass shutoff valve / illflem is right , there is no way you should get that kind of boost when you are wastegated

dcash, did you install the brass elbow which came with your #5 plate? If so, and the #5 plate is forward of stock, 40#'s is achievable, though not necessarily desirable. You probably know that your EGT’s will quickly get out of hand above about 2500 RPM with the plate that far forward. Keep an eye on the pyro!

If you've blown the diaphram out of the wastegate, it functions just like it is blocked off. I've done this!

But you have a boost leak. You should be able to find it by pressurizing the intake tract.

I make 40lbs boost but just for a few seconds and then it drops off to 37 or so but I think its because of the boost elbow that comes with a #11 plate from TST fooling the waste gate. My waste gate is functional.

illflem,

that is what i would guess happend (bad wastegate). i could make 28-30 when truck was stock and only had guages. i did replace the hose running to the wastegate. i guess it could also be that i have a boost leak as Strick-9 said. ill just have to check it out. also i do not have the boost elbow, i bought the plate from a buddy a while back and it is slid all the way forward now. i had it slid forward part way but when i tightened my gov. springs (about a week ago) we slid it the rest of the way to see if there was a difference. the boost is not so fast to climb but i still peg my guage, (0-35), the needle goes to the rivet holding the guage plate on and it is at least 39#. also thank you pzicha, however i will obviously have to wait and figure out whats up first. before tightening gov. springs and sliding plate the rest of the way forward, i could not, matter how hard i tried, get over 1200 egt. now i definately can, but i haven't gone over 1350. i also havent race anybody since the change:D

i cant tell you guys how much i appreciate the help. ill check it out this weekend and see what i can find out. be prepared for more dumb-*** questions, lol:D thanks again guys

OK - so maybe some of the experts here can answer a related wastegate question:

I understand how a properly functioning wastegate will limit boost at its design pressure - but WHAT GOOD does a restriction in the line do that merely limits the SPEED that the wastegate will actuate at? Restricting the aperature of the line to some reduced pressure flow might make it operate more SLOWLY - but NOT stop its operation or change the turbo limit it was originally designed for...

I can understand that for a relatively SHORT distance or period of time, the boost limiting ability of the wastegate will be altered, but only for as long as it takes the restricted pressure to finally equalize, and the wastegate again performs its task - so it seems to me that all these various restriction schemes do, is slow down the operation of the wastegate - NOT limit or "adjust" their operation to some new pressure level. That is, UNLESS you completely block the line to the wastegate and defeat its operation completely as this thread suggests!

SO. if *I* restrict (NOT plug!) the line leading to my turbo wastegate, and then head my truck and trailer up a steep grade, are some here claiming that my boost level CONSTANTLY will be at some significantly HIGHER pressure that before - or only that it will take proportionally LONGER for the wastegate to begin limiting boost. depending on the degree of restricion I have added?

What am I missing here?

This is just a guess so lets hear it if I am wrong. The boost elbow has a adjustable orfice that bleeds boost signal. I think its kinda like trying to air up a tire with a leaky air chuck in that enough air escapes that the tire takes forever to inflate. so much pressure gets bled off that the diaphram never sees enough pressure to open it more than just a little bit so higher boost is the result.

Bingo! Deezul

You can also put a solenoid in the pressure line running to the AFC. Blocking this line keeps the AFC from allowing more fuel because it never "sees" boost. This is also known as a "valet switch". Use this when your wife/kids drive your beast. Don't tell the kids about the hidden switch though. :D

yes gary I am completely shuting the waste gate off and not restricting it . you seem dumfounded by the idea which surprises me which so many other posts you seem to be so educated. these are actual results since I am so close to stock and we live in a valley . so here it is , I have a 31 foot 5th wheel and the climb is 6% out of our hole and before I miss it my combined weight is 16,000 lbs loaded truck and trailer . with the waste gate open or functioning correctly my speed starts to drop of before I reach 60 mph / with it closed with the extra boost I can reach 60mph and maintain it to the top which necessitates an actual change . I am not restricting flow or slowing it down , it is either on or on or off and I have experianced a difference . question it or not these are the facts
