Has anyone experienced their wastegate stuck closed? Truck is an 01 with about 40k. What would cause this and how best to fix it? Have been told that the whole turbo has to be replaced, is this true? If true, how difficult is it and where would be the best place to pick one up? Truck is an automatic so I'm sure it's a HY35W.

Many thanks

I've seen on big truck engines that idle too much get carboned up, also known as wet stacking. Caused by unburned fuel out exhaust. Also have seen the diaphram for wastegate actuator leak. Check actuator for leak or linkage binding.

What caused it? Not pushing the engine to full boost. I had it happen on mine when I blocked off the line. It stuck when I hooked it back up. Soaked the shafts with liquid wrench. It freed up after I worked the linkage back and forth.

Diesels need to work, they will live longer if you work them hard. If you never work them hard, they will carbon up. I dont recommend blocking the wastegate hose, will cause overboost, too much air to engine isnt good if fuel system cant keep up. Also worry about overspeeding turbo, which I've seen makes them explode.

wastegate

Well I can tell you by expercience that the diaphrams will leak. I was having serious de-fueling at high rpm... . after I installed my boost gauge I found out why. It was over the 20psi mark which causes the ecm to de-fuel the pump... . did some testing on the wastegate diaphram... ... . sure enough I could hear it leaking at 20# using an air tank and adapter for testing it. I talked to a Dodge mechanic today that said he has fixed a lot of stuck ones. He removes the turbo, lubes the moving parts... . and very carefully starts trying to break them loose. You have two chances..... it either frees up and works fine again..... or you break some of the linkage off and then go buy a new turbo. Hopefully you can get it fixed under warranty. Good luck. . :)

I could be wrong, but I think the wastegate actuator is a seperate part, you shouldnt need to replace the whole turbo. Just make shure if you replace it, that you adjust it properly!

tgee

yes you are right... the actuator is seperate including the diaphram... . in fact Dodge has a replacement kit that includes the diaphram, linkage and the diaphram frame. But where most of them usually freeze up is where the wastegate shaft comes out through the housing on the turbo. That breaks, then you are in trouble. :(

I have had this same problem on my 01 auto. I simply took mine to the dealer, they said that they couldn't get just the wastegate so they put a brand new turbo on, cost me $0. Best advice is to let them deal with it beings it is on warrenty. Good luck.

Thanks to all those that have responded!

Question 2- Have would the turbo/wastegate be covered under any warranty? 3yr/36K or Engine/Drivetrain 100K, or? Truck does not have extended warranty.

Thanks again

I'm just going off what the mechanic said and it running poor in the higher RPM's. Truck was originally sold in Canada and have been told that the warranty is now invalid because it's in the States... any truth to this? I would think this is BS but would like to confirm this before I make myself look like an *****. Also, one dealership had said the the 100K only applys to the engine itself so that would exclude the wastegate/turbo under that warranty.

Just wanting to clear things up and get to the bottom of this.

BTW, truck is completely stock.

Thanks again

had to open my mouth!

Well my truck sat for about a week when i went to colorado to go skiing, and when i got back i drove it and the wastegate is stuck shut again, had the same problem about exactly one year ago. I plan on putting a pdr hx 40 on it anyways, but i figure i might as well get my free new turbo from dodge. Anything special that would make it happen again, i dont let it idle for hours on end or anything, the only thing i do different in the winter is run power service instead of number 1 fuel, but i cant see how that would do it. Not very important anyways, but just looking for helpful info for my next larger and more expensive turbo. THanks

your 01 would have an HY35 on it, leave it shut and put a comp box on it and hang on!!! :-laf

allot of people make straps to keep them closed

i ran one for a year or so

"Turbocharger" is covered under a 5 year 100,000 Emission Warranty. Also covered under the 5 year 100,000 engine warrant is the "turbocharger housing and internal parts". This is straight from the warranty manual that came with my 2001. 5. SNOKING

i use MOUSE MILK lubricant on mine. no problems in 345000KMS. this is an aircraft product, recommended by aircraft manufacturers for this purpose.
