Watch out! my spare tire came lose (cable that hold's it frayed and broke)@ 95K funny thing is it happened @5 mph in a trailer park over a speed bump. you guy's might take a look @ your's.

Thanks for the warning. i'll check mine. The spare has never been out from under the truck.

That usually happens when the cable is a little loose. It wiggles around and frays the cable until it breaks.

Mine's snugged up tight since a long time ago. I should check it though.

Buy a Spare tire lock.

I have a spare tire lock that will support the weight of the tire in the event of a broken cable and it prevents (or slows down) theft.

When my '95 Ram 1500 was 3 days old I had my tire stolen in central Phoenix. Lowered the tire down the conventional way just enough to get cutters in their to cut it. *******s... At least they appeared to use the correct tool and didn't scratch the truck at all. The under bed winch really didn't cost too much from the dealer. I was surprised.

Mine cranks up, but I can't snug it as it acts stripped. Good idea on the lock, I hardly worry about taking the keys out of the ignition, let alone worry about my spare being stolen. But at least I wouldn't have to worry about it falling out. Thanks for the heads up.

Has anyone seen the lock that Dodge sells. It replaces the actual hex tube that you use to lower the tire. I put one on my '95 when I got it stolen and I was very impressed by it... you only have to remember not to loose the keyed attachment.

I never thought to look @ that but i have checked the tire for air!(once apon a time)now a tie down strap and the stock set up hold it.

I lost my new spare tire on a 2001. Same thing, the tire was loose enough to fray the cable untill it finally broke. Check em if you have not.

Lucky it didn't happen on the road.

I lost a spare on my o'le Ford once. Heard a "thunk" sound, but didn't think anything of it until I got home and saw the tire gone. I decided I would accept the loss and not go look for it. Didn't want to walk into an incident with cop cars all over the place and a dead Honda with a tire in the jammed up into the radiator.

I'd hate to be the guy behind a 3/4 ton truck with a 265 75r 16 Load Range E tire mounted on a heavy duty wheel that just fell off at 70mph.

I think its pretty common on all trucks with that kind of spare mounting system. Ive had it happen to me but not in my Dodges. Once I was driving a company Chevy S-10. I went thru an intersection and heard a thump. I looked in the rear view and saw the spare air born. Instinct was to brake and that was the wrong thing to do. Anyway the tail gate did a good job of stopping the tire from hitting oncoming traffic.



You know------ then ya gotta stop and get out, throw the tire in the bed and look around to see how many people are laughing at you.

I had the spare out of mine to install the B&W hitch and a 7-pin plug in the bed. I know for a fact I cinched the spare up tight when I reinstalled it, but the next weekend I started hearing a thunking/knocking sound in the rear. Yep, the spare was dangling about 3" loose on the cable.



Voice of experience - If you disturb them, you'd better recheck them for awhile.
