Leave it to me to screw something up right before going on a major road-trip. In getting my 3/4 ton 1991 W250 ready to tow our 36-foot 5th wheel from Colorado to Wisconsin, I thought I'd be proactive and change the fluids and filters. After spinning off the fuel/water seperator, I noticed the wires were working their way out. Rather than try to clean them up with electrical tape, I ordered a new sensor from Geno's and installed it last night.

Here's the rub... Now, all of a sudden, my 'water in fuel' light won't go off, no matter HOW much I drain out of the brand new filter! Since changing it is about as difficult as changing a lightbulb, I can't figure how I could have dorked this one up...

Does anyone have any idea why the water in fuel light is on now? Seems like the sensor is too simple to receive a defective one, but is that even possible?

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Your problem is that you messed with it. No joke.

Remove it and throw that stupid piece of garbage in the trash can where it belongs.

There are several perfectly good filters available for your use that DO NOT require that electrical JUNK.

I also now have the water in fuel light after a recent filter change.

I was told that perhaps I screwed the sensor in too tight and the contacts are shorted against something.

Someday I may either loosen the sensor half a turn or unplug the wires.

I'm still thinking about it.

Question...

If a light driver drives with a light on,

then what does a hard driver drive with?

Food for (not much) thought.

Jay

The easiest way to undo the damage is to disconnect the sensor from the electrical harness. Next time buy a fuel filter without the sending unit. Every time I clean the motor with degreaser & rinse, the light comes on. It also comes on sometimes with a new filter. Water collects in the wiring harness or the contacts short out in the filter. A lot of users have reported this problem. How many of us have actually had water in the filter anyway? My Mercedes did not have any WIF sensors. I put 120Kmi+ on my VW's and never used the water separator drain.

Regards,

Use a Fleetgard FS1251, it has a water drain and will screw right on. Or you could unplug it, go on your trip and worry about it later :D
