2004 Fuel Pick-Up

I went Coyote hunting in X-mas Valley this last couple of days, Day time temps 26-32 degrees, Night time temps down to 10 degrees. Fueled up truck in X-mas Valley Thursday night (1/2 tank). Truck ran normal to this point.

Friday 6 a. m. started truck and it ran for about 30-45 seconds and shut off.

Restarted truck again 20-30 seconds and off. (I can hear dogs howling in the distance looking for an easy snack!) Eat breakfast, talk to locals, Met up with Delwin "Digger" Kropf, Retired grass seed and Hay Farmer.

He loans tools and informs us of Coyotes eating house cats in town!

I pull fuel filter and it looks normal. We add fuel additive to tank (Gas Line Anti Freeze) temp hovering around 15 degrees. No luck.

Wait until 8 a. m. for local Car Quest to open, Buy new filter and more additive,I put 16oz. in tank and 16oz. in filter wait 5 minutes and put in new filter. Some stuff called Diesel 911. Salesman swears by it. I swear at it. I pull line from filter open tank, apply towels soaked in hot water to gas line along frame. I am now wallowing around in slush instead of powdery snow.

I notice a one of those little propane grills sitting on a porch, borrowed the grill for a heat sorce under truck. I pulled the line from the bottom of the filter and tried to blow into fuel line. ( where that guy with 250,000 on his Power Stroke that still has the stock glow plugs, he could blow it free)

I do the siphon trick on the line to the point where it starts to let fuel come up. Walk to station and get gallon jug and diesel, ( same place that sold me the super fuel the night before) the attendant tells me the fuel is checked daily and that they add anti gel to every load. Funny I thought that it come from the distributor that way.

I add fuel to filter, after draining 911 out, install filter and prime it 3-4 times and it rumbles to a shakey start.

Now the check engine light is on. no dealer for 100 miles. truck had some miss and stumble in 5th gear. on the way home, shut it off and it check engine light went off. I plan to change the filter this a. m. again.

This was my 14 year old sons Birthday trip!

I think you just experienced fuel gelling in the exposed fuel lines. One that happens, it is difficult to get it moving again until the temps are high enough for the fuel to dissolve again.

I am sure no one needs to mention being prepared for cold weather before the temps drop below freezing. Now that you have it behind you, just keep the winter fuel treatment on hand to dump in the tank before each refill. That way it gets mixed up good.

Your problem this time was adding the fuel treatment to the gelled tank didn't do much and won't until it gets thoroughly mixed with the fuel.

The check engine light was probably related to low fuel pressure and since you finally got the truck started and drove it a while, the fuel line warmed up and that fuel treatment you put in will do a good job on that load of fuel.

I forgot to comment on the stumbling... that would most likely have been related to air in the fuel system. With the fuel so thick, it would be very hard to get it all out quickly. By the time you read this, I am sure stumbling is pretty much gone.

I changed my mind about replaceing the filter. I figure I should leave it in until this tank of fuel is just about empty. Then I will change it. I don't want to have to do it twice. I check to see if the truck had thrown any codes after this ordeal and it coughed up P-0191 & P-0341, I would like to know if anyone can tell me what these codes are pointing to. For all the mileage misers out there you should try getting rid of a tank of fuel, it seems to just keep going and going.
