I recently discovered that the carpet on the passenger floorboard is wet. What could be causing this? I have had a few people say it could be my air conditioning. If so how could i correct that?

You didn't mention front or back, but I'll guess if it is the front it will be the A/C drain is plugged, or if it is the rear, the third brakelight.

Either the A/C drain is plugged or have you leveled the front of the truck at all?. A/C drain issues come when guys level their front ends and instead of the water draining out the air passing through the front of the truck pushes the water back inside the drain and does not allow it to drain. Make sure the drain is free and clear and add a extension tube to the drain to lengthen it downward some and see if that helps any at all. Mine did that after leveling the front and after adding some hose to lengthen the drain it stopped and drains normally... . Andy

Not sure what year truck is but on my 96 ( and I think all 2nd gen are this way) the drain for the A/C sticks straight out of the firewall behind the passenger wheel well or there abouts.

The sealant around the drain tube dries allowing the discharged water that is blown back on the firewall to get into the truck.

After 11 years mine starting doing this but since it rains a lot down here it was hard to pin point. I finaly comfirmed it on trip from FL to KS on nice sunny day in GA with water over 1/2 inch over the carpet ( I Have two floor mats over the carpet).

When I got to KC I put a 6 inch long heater hose on it. It helped a little. When I got back home to Florida I did an over kill and put a 2 foot long heater hose on it and tied the end to the front traction bar.

My floor hasn't been wet since.

As I recall it was the smaller (diameter) hose. I had a choice of two sizes.

I took out my socket set and tried on the socket to the drain out until I found one that fit. ( I also bought a hose clamp to keep it on).

I used a shop vac to suck out the a/c vent in the firewall. I also attached a hose and ran it down to the framerail so that dirt doesn't clog it up. That solved my problem. Also check the rear window, they like to leak as well.

I'll go with all of the above plus this one: I was having the same problem and the dealer thought it was the a/c due to the fact that they had just worked on it. Wasn't that. They mentioned that there was a problem with the third brake light seal, but it wasn't that. Finally they put it in their body shop and pressurized the cabin with a scented vapor to see where the vapor was leaking out of. They found the particular seal that was bad and repaired it. All is well now. Unfortunately, I was never told exactly which one it was, so I'm not sure what they fixed, but whatever they did, it worked.

I had the same problem with my dad's '97. I removed the blower motor and cleaned everything I could out from around the bottom of the evaporator coil... there were leaves, pine straw, and trash. I blew compressed air back through the drain to make sure that it was clear. This helped, but didn't completely fix the problem. Next I used some 5/8 ID clear vinyl tubing and slipped one end over the drain. The other end I zip tied to the frame. It seems that condensate would come out of the drain and then run along the outside bottom of the drain tube and back into the cab. My hose fix has been working good for a little over a year... . and all thanks to some advice given here on the TDR.

There's no hose, just a black plastic tube that comes out of the firewall down below the turbo along by where the down pipe goes.

It still could be the third brake light. If it leaks there is usually no sign of water in the rear. That is because the floor in the rear is raised a little so there is a channel on both sides that acts like a rain gutter. Which side in the front gets wet depends on how the truck leans when it is parked.

Joe brings up a good point. When I added my sleeper cab, I had the body shop shave and fill the hole where the third brake light used to live since the sleeper has its own brake light. I figured it was one less place to leak from.

ok so i looked at the drain to my AC and it isnt clogged. i mean i started my truck and turnded the AC on and i could feel air blowing out of the drain tube. someone said that if you put a leveling kit on it that it could cause it to leak in the truck. is that true because i have a leveling kit on it. im still thinking it could be rain water getting in my truck because it rained today and my carpet was wet but i also ran the AC all day. how can i tell for sure wether its rain water or the AC leaking. i need to get this little problem fixed so my carpet doesnt mold.

You`re right about the mold. Be sure to pull up the carpet & padding & let it dry out real good. Voice of expierence here...

Passenger floor wet....

My 96 just had the same problem and I found help here at TDR. The drain for the AC comes out of the firewall behind the accumulator. I installed 18" of 5/8" heater hose ($2. 50) with a hose clamp and used wire slip ties to secure it to frame pointing to the rear. They told me that the air was pushing the water back inside and overflowing. All I know is it now drains outside the cab. It was dripping on me the whole time I was under the truck. It is kind of a pain tightening the clamp but you can do it.

Thanks TDR members!

After reading about this potential issue a few years back, I used a right-angle gasser neoprene distributor spark plug boot - fit the pipe at the firewall perfectly, and then used an appropriately sized section of flexible tubing to drain down lower on the firewall - a foot or more as I recall - never any problems, before or after - but yeah, it does drip accumulated condensation when parked after AC usage - and that's a GOOD thing!... :-laf

I'm bringing this thread back to the top because today I discovered my passenger side carpet was wet. The A/C has been leaking back into the cab for a long time judging by the amount of water pooled under the insulation. I know it is the A/C because the foam backing on the rubber insulation piece under the dash is soaked all the way up to where the A/C drain is located.

I was aware of this problem on other vehicles but thought mine was OK because the carpet was always dry before. If you haven't done it yet do the drain mod. I kept putting it off, now I have to remove the seat to get the carpet out and dried. #@$%!

I will check the possibility it is the 3rd brake light, but I have a piece of hose on the drain now.
