Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Dana 80 brake swap?

Ok I can't take it anymore. After I blow my head gasket I started to hear water running in the cab. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side under the dash. The only way I know that the head gasket blow was that there was oil in the radiator. So could there just be some sludge in the heater core? It seams to make the noise more when I start it up in the A. M. But It will make the noise just about any time I diver it. Seems that the water noise goes in pulses, it does not mater if the heater is on or off. Any ideas how to go about fixing it or figuring out what is causing this noise?

First off It sounds like there is still air in the sysstem ... lots of it and being when engine is cold the thermostat is closed. It will be most pronounced when closed. When cold pop the cap open and top her off and start it. leaving the cap off and let it warm up a bit (Weather sitting in drive or with exhaust brake on) Not just by idleing it. You will prolly see the water level drop so add away and when that thermostat opens keep an eye on the level as if it rises quick shut her down and pop the cap back on.

I am moving this to the engine thread.

Well I just went out and did as you said and I think it may have worked. I will know if it did by tomorrow. Thanks for the help.....

Stupid question, but you did replace the head gasket?

The whooshing you hear is air, not the coolant.

Your head might be cracked and letting air into the coolant.

I had a bad piece of radiator hose that leaked air into my coolant. That was an easy fix.

Blew out the head gasket about 3 months after the heater hose fix. It really got noisy with all the air. Complete head job and studs to prevent it from happening again.

good luck

I'm getting something like that, and get it (I think) only when cold, first thing on start-up . . . AND I'm getting the fluctuating thermostat as well. 152K miles, haven't had vehicle long enough to really know much more about it. Any help is appreciated, what do I need to look for and find? Is this an air leak somewhere? Once it's found/fixed, will my temp stop fluctuating (it goes from about 160 to 190, never really stops anywhere for more than 10-15 seconds). Will I risk any engine damage driving it as is? Thanks, Alan.

I usually get that exact same sound coming from the glove box area in the winter when I plug in my block heater. When I start up in the morning, and once I get the engine moving, I can hear water flowing and it sounds like the was a bunch of air built up over night from the heater. I have been hearing this for the entire time I have owned the truck when I plug the block heater in for the night and start 'er up in the morning. I believe it is normal.

I had air in mine. I tried Toolman's idea and that didn't even work. Ended up installing a 'flushing tee', removing the cap off of it while filling the radiator. Messy? Yes. Get the air out? Yup.

Had same noise last week after replacing the radiator in my '95. It's caused by an air pocket in the heater core. I simply pulled the truck up on a slight incline and removed the radiator cap (make sure the engine is cold/warm before removing the cap). Turn the heat on and to the hottest temp setting. Once the coolant gets hot enough to open the t/stat, the air pocket should release. Re-install the rad cap and the noise should be gone. If still there, repeat again. It can be tough to get that air out.

Good Luck!
