My water pump died right in front of my eyes yesterday while in someone's driveway (DryBones of NW Bombers). It decided mile number 366,159 was its last. Luckily NAPA had one in stock for $59 and it took only a half hour to swap it out. The hardest part was getting the darned petcock open to drain the radiator.
For some reason I was thinking the water pumps were more expensive than that. The NAPA part was new, no core charge.
