I know there has been a lot of talk on the forums about water pumps and now I have one leaking at 132K miles. Small leak at this time and seems to be apparent only after sitting for a few hours. My question at this point is what brand of pump should I look for? Seems I recall there was a suggestion to go to a Caterpillar dealer or direct to a Cummins source. I would like to get the part in hand before starting the job. The only parts store I have nearby is an O'Rileys. Have not heard good news on later model pumps from them.

Water pumps aren't hard to change, but I dislike fooling with anti-freeze and fragile finicky drain plugs. After 2 parts house pump failures, I got a Cummins pump.

Cummins pump, new not reman. I think they quit the remans now anyway. The Gates pumps your typical auto parts store will get are junk.

Looks like it may be a crap shoot any way I go but I will try the Cummins. This one lasted 13 years...if it's the same pump. Now the search begins for a Cummins dealer near enough to me or wait....Amazon. I can have a drone drop one in my yard. Thanks to all for the feedback. I was pretty certain I had seen some conversation on this issue.

I looked at the Genos book and only saw the Gates pump the first time around. Looked again today and saw it listed below the others. Thanks.

After talking to the Genos folks, I bought the Gates. The Cummins has a one year warranty and the Gates is lifetime. Hopefully the Gates warranty will not have to be used. Genos said they have not had many warranty issues with either pump so I am hoping the Gates will be okay. Of course, with a one year warranty on the Cummins, you would not likely get many back. They also said after looking at both pumps the only difference seems to be the finish on the metal, with the Gates being a rough rather than a polish or fine finish. I can barely see the pump down there so finish is not an issue. Thought readers might like Genos 2c on the subject.

I'm carrying a Cummins spare after asking a lot of questions. For me, the main thing that I learned from a company that rebuilds only waterpumps is that while China may be having more success making bearings, they have not mastered or found a way to deliver high quality seals 100% of the time. I was carrying a Gates spare, but I sold it. I don't want to have to use the warranty and am tired of the work & expense doing the work over.

Put the 6.7 cummins pump on the 5.9 in my 03 last year. haul a 11k lb fifth wheel up the rockies a bunch and find the extra coolant flow a good thing. the late 6.7 pump has more and larger vanes on the rotor. be working well so far.

I believe I have a leaking water pump as well. It is the original on my '05 with 150K. What do I need to remove to see if it is in fact the pump? Is there a weep hole? There is antifreeze solution on the bottom of the AC compressor. Since I changed the radiator and hoses this summer, this is all that's left.

There is a weep hole but usually the bearing is gone. Once you take the pressure off the belt you should be able to wiggle it up and down.

IIRC I pulled the air box, removed the belt from the pulleys to look at weep hole and feel WP. Also, check the idler at the same time. I got a spare Gates from Geno's but the pump passed insp but the idler didn't pass, replaced it.
