I recently replaced the water pump for the second time. The first one starting making a lot of noise at 48,000 miles. The second one tore a vane lose then broke the fan belt at 99,000 miles on the odometer. My previous 3 Dodge/Cummins never had a water pimp problem. Is this unusual? I am thinking I may just replace the pump at 45,000 miles to avoid road side break downs.

There HAVE been QC issues with the water pumps since roughly 2006. My 2005 had almos 100k on it now and I will likely replace it when I change the fluid this winter.

That being said, the concensus is that the Cummins oem have less problems then others...

Curious who manufactured the one that failed the second time??

I am glad you asked. I was so focused on the bussiness end of the pump I never even looked. Concentric USA is stamped on the pump flange. I would have expected it to say Cummins or Fleetguard. This is the pump put on by the Dodge dealer under warranty.

I HAVE recently read stories about dealerships buying cheaper parts at NAPA or other discount parts stores, and then charging full oem retail in order to make even more money.

Can you check your receipt/work order from when they replaced the waterpump and see what they listed for parts??

I believe that the Concentric is a Cummins pump. I posted pictures of that at one time, I'll see if I can find it.

To defend a dealership parts that are OEM may not say "insert manufacturer name here" on them, but many do.

I will bet many many dollars that dealerships do exactly that. I see them in and out of parts houses all the time.

The part number listed in the dealer repair invoice is 5086959AA. I did a google search of the part number and found an ebay listing that showed the pump and box. The box had a Mopar logo on it and the pump had the same markings as mine. I also found the chrysler-partscenter.com site. It noted that the ... AA part number has been superseded by the ... AB part number. So it looks like it is an OEM part.

In case I haven't mentioned it today, I REALLY MISS the old search that we had before the upgrade...

Anyhow, here is the thread with another failed Concentric pump. Please read both pages, second page shows a brand new Cummins pump that I took right out of the box.

I just went and read that. Interesting thread. Looks like truck I just bought had a replacement a year ago. I wonder how many additional failures we are going to see? And where people are finding the pieces?

So are the USA built Concentric pumps good or no good? My original is still good at 66,000 miles but want to pick up a spare.

Got mine with almost 180k and it is a 2003. Guy was retired and hauled his camper back and forth to FL every year. Not sure where the rest of the miles came from, but i know for sure that i am not putting 20ka a year in a truck when i am retired.

The pump in my '07 was replaced under warranty at 49K. The factory one in the '04. 5 is still going strong at well over 300K.

IIRC, water pump longevity problems DID only start occuring around 2006, though maybe a little earlier... I a have a 2005 with almost 100k and I like I mwentioned earlier, I am still trying to decide whether to replace the water pump when I do a coolant flush and hose change this winter. I may simply take mine out, inspect it closely, and maybe even simply rebuild it myself with quality bearings and seals if I can find them. Kinda depends what I see when I take it out.

All that being said, I AM curious about the longevity of the Bosch oem pumps, but can find NO info about them, except that they exist, part# 0986435505 which is good for the 04. 5 to 07 CTD. Bosch part# for the 03-04 CTD is #0986435503

I also DID find out that both Bosch and Cummins add a two letter sufffix to the part # if it is a rebuilt unit. Someone please correct me if I am wrong!!!

Not sure about Bosch but I right up on the Cummins... .....

NX suffix means new exchange / with a core charge

RX suffix means recon exchange / with a core charge

PX suffix means premium exchange / with a core charge (seen with injectors)

PPX suffix means premium plus exchange / with a core charge.

OK from what I can tell, and it makes sense, Bosch uses a simple "x" suffix to indicate a rebuilt part.

MORE importantly, I corrected my first post to give the CORRECT Bosch water pump # for the ISB... . I had erroneously posted the Bosch Part# for injectors.
