Does any one know where I can get a water pump for a Cummins 855? Cummins Rocky Mountain says they are discontinued and cant supply the part. This was a very popular engine for big rigs in the 80s. I cant believe they don't support it. I know this is the wrong forum but I saw 95 members reading so I thought someone might know.

That doesn't sound quite right.....can you provide your engine serial number or cpl number??? There were several water pumps used over the years, earliest I remember was the pancake pump that rotated for the belt adjustment.

Cummins usually supports their products for a very long time...

Cummins doesn't offer a reman. I will go that route if I can find a rebuilder.

The engine number is 30118039. The SO number 56878. Model NT855G or 6. It is a stationary power plant 1984 vintage. Thanks for any ideas.

I come up with 3801788RX which is still available. There is one in Scarborough Maine and another one on hand at the Harrisburg Pennsylvania distribution center. I am concerned that Rocky Mountain Cummins did not take the same steps that I did by following the supercessions and other option code families..

Please let me verify my part number with my Cummins distributor in the morning before you go any further. I am 99% sure I have reached the correct conclusion but I want 100% before I tell you it's good.

That would be a Cummins ReCon unit, I assume that will be ok???

It's called a "Suitcase" style pump because the idler pulley adjustment slot resembles a suitcase handle. Very common pump back in the day..

You had an in-experienced parts person looking that up at Cummins Rocky Mountain, no doubt about it. They might want to take a few more parts training modules or possibly switch to a real estate career....

Nobody knows everything but to be a good parts person you need to have an interest, be willing to ask questions and have some pride in what you do. Stopping at the first result is un-acceptable. Could have asked for help, listened to the little voice in their head that should have been saying "They MUST offer a water pump for this engine", etc....

Instead just gives the equivalent of a shrug by saying "It's no longer available"....that person will cost that company some big money at some point....

That crap doesn't hold up very long in the truck and engine business.....

I'm always Leary of young parts people especially if they tell me not available or out of stock...at that point I'll look for a older parts person and ask them
My biggest grip about any parts person is one that takes a phone call while I'm waiting at the counter for parts doesn't he realize someone is paying money to have me go for parts...While that phone caller is sitting at home drinking a beer watching TV ??

I have been nose to nose with the company president here several times on that very subject....we are mandated to answer the phones no matter what. I feel that the person standing there should not be put off repeatedly due to incoming callers.

Some dealerships have created "Phone Rooms" to handle incoming calls and leave the counter people free for the the walk-ins. LA Freightliner has recently switched to that type of set up and it works well. The problem is staffing the "Phone Room" in that you need top guns on the phones. I am working on the concept here and will have it implemented in the near future....

Truck Parts is a learned science, nothing like automotive. Most automotive types can't do the truck stuff. It's too custom......and requires much "Out of the Box" thinking...

I owned a mobile truck repair service years ago the best thing I every did was to hire good looking female parts runners to get the parts from the dealership out to the mechanic
The counter parts men would fall all over them self to help my female parts runners...One of my little sweetie never even carried a part out to her truck the parts man always would ????
At one GMC dealership the parts manager had a window that over looked the counter my sweetie would come in and he would be at the counter to help her ????

mwilson, Yes a reman will be ok and yes the drawing you sent looks exactly like the pump on the engine. I can't thank you enough for your efforts and help. I will call Cummins Rocky Mountain with this part number. Again Thank You!
