I have a 2001, 4X4, Auto, with 920 mi. The other day I lifted the lever on the Water Separator to purge whatever, if any, water was in the system. Really, I just wanted to see what would happen.

The way I read the Owners Manual, it seems like I should have seen a stream of gas shoot out and down the waste tube. The reason I thought this, was because the manual said, "don't hold the valve open too long or you may purge the fuel from the system", requiring a procedure to get the fuel back in the fuel lines. Seemed like an easy process but I didn't want to deal with it.

When I lifted the lever, nothing really happened.

I lifted the lever, a few dribbles of, I guess water, came out and nothing more. I did this about three times, thinking I must be doing something wrong. I never did see any gas shoot out.

I read here, be careful where you do this as it really creates a mess.

Is something wrong? Should gas/water have expelled itself from the fuel system?

How often should I attempt to purge water from the system? Everytime I fuel up?

Mine does the same thing. The integrity of the system is so good that no air can get in to let the liquid out. If you leave the valve open and turn the key to the on position, I promise, stuff will come out of there at a very high rate for about 3 to 5 seconds. The only time mine will bleed off liquid is when I loosen the filter canister top so it can get some air. BTW, make sure you push the valve down when you are done. Even though nothing may come out, as soon as you try to crank, if the valve sticks open (and they do) fuel goes everywhere.

Hey guys, if you drain it while motor is running you will have a mess but it will drain out crap really quick,so if you do it while running do it quick

good luck, jdm-joe

Trust me you don't want to leave that valve open too long as it left me stranded at the gas station because after I figured I drain to much out I started the truck and started to drive off with priming the system first (bumping the starter) and my truck died and could not get restarted after it moved 15 feet. I had to get it towed away.
