My 95's Water Temp Gauge started reading 200 to 215 before the thermostat opened. After the it would opened around 180 to 190. I put in a new thermostat but it still does it on the first start up of a drive each day. The sending unit had to be replaced 2 years ago as it was faulty but then the gauge would jump
from 140 to 220 and then right back down. Like I said after the frist time it opens , it then opens at the right temp. Any Ideas,or suggestions.

Best place to start is to get a thermometer and take your rig's temperature. A candy thermometer from any supermarket will work. It will be pretty obvious where to go from there.

Just where do you stick the thermometer #ad

Don't know how the thermostat is mounted in the 95, the 99 has two passages built into the thermostat so the water moves past the thermostat a little until it opens. Most gasoline engines have a bypass hose so the thermostat will see the water temperature as it heats up. Sounds like yours might not be circulating any water until it gets hot. If everything else fails I would drill a small hole in the thermostat valve plate( about 1/16" ). This will allow water to pass by thermostat and it will open at the correct temp. bg

You would put the thermometer in the radiator filler neck to confirm that when the water starts to circulate it is 180deg. or 215 deg. as the gauge shows. I think that is what illflem had in mind. bg
