I just had my waterpump go out on me during a camping trip. I was able to limp the truck to a dealer to get it fixed and on the road again, but I has wondering if they screwed since they new I was stuck there.

So here are my 2 questions:

1. Should this be covered under warranty (2004 with 80,000 miles)

2. what should it cost? They charged me $650 for the pump, labor and coolant.

Dont know about the warranty but the pump cost like 60 or 70 bucks at most and the coolant is 11 to 15 bucks per gal x how ever many they put in. I JUST LOVE DEALERSHIPS dont you? I never have installed one but looking at post's and the Chiltons book about 1or 2 hours (I dont work fast) and it looked like about a 6 pack kind or job. New fan belt thermostat and quite possibly a new belt tensioner and off we go. extra parts that I thru in just because for the stat/belt/tensioner/and the pump was about 170 from Geno's

IRRC the oem pump is about (dealer)$300 now@Cummins I would guess about $150??

Factory coolant about $30per gallon

Please help me BOB with IRRC? The best I can come up with is remove and replace component? Thermo $17. 00/belt tensioner $87. 00/water pump $35. 00/ belt $28. 00 and zerex from auto zone $14. 00 per x say 6 gal = about $250. 00. parts. What is shop time BOB I have no idea what the price is per hour. Or do you guys work on per job. IM NOT TRYING TO BE A SMART A** IM TRYING TO TELL THE WIFE THE PRICE DIFF AS I NEED TO DO THE SAME JOB. Only the extra parts that I would put in because its torn apart why do it again later.

Hmm funny I just ordered those same parts from Genos this morning. Well did a Boonie box since its cheaper, water pump and thermostat.

I carry a spare pump from Napa in the camper. Might've been $50? Easy roadside repair. Friend of mine with 05' was stuck in the middle of nowhere with a bad water pump. It was worth the $50 for insurance. I figured if it goes bad I'll refill with water from the camper (50gal capacity) and drain/refill when I find a parts store later.

Unless the tensioner bracket is really worn, just replace the pulley. You can buy the OEM pulley at Autozone for about $30.

Irrc if I remember correctly
Labor per hour is going to vary per Market
Location. there are dealers in Orange
County at $ 135 per hour

I just called a local dealer to see if it would be under warranty and it it was up in August. I was under the impression that the engine was 100,000 with no time limit. I guess it's 100,000/7 years. They quoted me about $450 for the job too.

Do you think there's any chance that I could get some money back fro the dealer that fixed it? Chances are I'm SOL.

I hope I don't ever have to go on another dealer lot. When and if I HAVE to go, I will picture everyone there as having on a black mask and pointing a . 45 at me until they PROVE otherwise. $650 for that job? That makes Jesse James look like he took penny candy!

Warranty on an 04 is 7 years or 100K miles, if you are the 1st owner or a 2nd owner with a paid transfer, otherwise its 5 yeas/100K miles. If the truck was originally purchased before the day you took it to the dealership in 2004 then you would not have any warranty.

Thanks BOB My truck has close to 100K im going to replace the W/Pump and all the associated parts just to be sure. I hate to replace things on the side of the road or a wally world parking lot.

Isn't that sorta like me buying your truck for x dollars, then a week later trying to get a rebate? It is what it is, sorry... .

Most times a water pump will give a warning sign, small leak, before failure.
