Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Waterpump

Drove the truck about 20 miles today and noticed I had no heat. Looking at my temp gauge I saw that it was high. After I pulled into my driveway I observed a stream of coolant running under the truck. It appears to be coming from the waterpump. There was also coolant all over the engine bay, probably dispersed from the fan. I'm going to replace the waterpump tomorrow. Searching the forums I could not find anyone with a similar problem. Anyones waterpump seal leak like I described?? I hope I didn't cause any damage due to lack of cooling.

the link I gave you these pumps are not remans. and rockauto are remans or more expensive. I have heard stories. about napa and others have crapped out on them. bad and good. I had 160k miles on mine and its still good going to replace it next month just as winter maint. you will always get what you paid for. I dont think you damaged anything you didnt say what temps it was showing on the temp gauge. but it may be worth pulling the thermostat checking it over replace if needed same time. 2 times I have had cracked therms and didnt even know according to my temp gauge. you slowly get used to how the gauge moves. replace them with what ever I like the oem/cummins better gasket. also pull the temp/sensor next to thermostat check it over. when you do the pump. you will have a good chance to drain the coolant and replace with a good coolant. 50/50 mix or mix your own use. filtered water only not tap... if I remember the pet cock valve on the radiator is driver side above the intercooler tube. pull twist or twist pull. get a o-ring ahead of time probley will tear or warp when removing. good luck. .

Sounds to me like the thermostat may have gone bad. I would also replace the radiator cap. When you check out the thermostat,Look to see if any parts are missing. I replaced mine and still had a problem until I found the washer like part that goes on the end wedged off to the side. This was on a cummins thermostat.

Changing the water pump is pretty easy. The petcock on the radiator is what was hard for me. It doesn't feel like it is made very well. You have to turn and pull if I remember right. I did mine a couple of years ago and I am still amazed that the petcock is holding.

check the weep holes under the water pump before they go out.



I got mine for about $70 it was "airtex" or something like that. Don't get the one from autozone. Nothing to back it up, just sometimes parts are low quality and what good does lifetime warranty mean if you have to replace the starter every year.



THe CUMMINS part is about $160-170 but is is a little better design. with the new pump my water temps are 1-2 degrees higher.

distilled water at wal-mart $. 72 gal x 3. Way better than even filtered water. WP, tstat, 3 gal prestone & water=$100.

Yes-cheap petcock! 1/4 turn & pull. I unscrewed mine and broke off the keeper tits, so it came completly out. Had to push hard to install (fight with it & swear). Last note add a hose to the outlet, makes for a better & driyer drain.

I just replaced the water pump last week on my 98. 5. Bought a lifetime from napa 41 bucks. I just let the truck cool and took the belt off the pulley and took out the bolts and tapped the water pump and it fell off. The coolant went into a big pan under the truck . I would avoid the drain on the radiator if you can.
