"Long time listener, first time caller"

This organization is great! I joined TDR in July when I ordered my truck. I picked my truck up on the last day of August. It has taken me this long to ask my first question because any questions I have had have already been talked about. Again, this place rocks!

I have read the threads about all the different waxes and paint treatment products that everybody uses. And, like synthetic oil, it is a personnel preference, so I won't even go there. My question is: should we even be "waxing" at all?

The guy that ran the shop that installed my flares insisted to only ever polish paint and to never wax or seal it. He says that the paint will never breath if sealed. He did show me what a Meguiar's #7 would do for the paint and it did look great. This is very confusing as I have always waxed any vehicle I have driven. Thanks for the input.

Meguiar's recommends wax themselves. I use their products although I haven't on my Dodge yet. I use the clearcoat safe cleaner followed by the polish and then I put a coat of wax on top of that to protect it. I've never had any paint issues. I used that process on my 96 Impala SS from that day I bought it to the day my ex-wife drove off in it. :D

I would do it like you have in the past. I don't think anyone can do too much paint maintenance. Try a polish and see how you like it, if so, stay with it.

I found an 800 number for Mequiar's and they said that if I used their #7 polish that it would wash off in the rain and they most certainly recommend a wax / sealer. I have been using the Amsoil Dry Wash or Miracle Wash for awhile now on other vehicles and just love it. I will let the flares "dry" a little longer before I hit them. Thanks for the input.

POLISH... Wax is an abrasive!

Unless you have oxidation buildup that you want to rub out then definitely polish. I use Zaino Bros show quality polish http://www.zainostore.com it's fantastic stuff (but not quick to install). Their touch-up spray is fantastic to keep it looking great between polishes too.

Slvrstrk, Yes they man at the install shop is partially correct... you should not wax new paint for at least 90 days to allow proper curing. As far as to polish and wax is simple, polishes removes or polishes out surface defects in the paint&clear coat (smoothes it out) and of course wax helps protect it. Stay away from waxes that have petroleum distillites in them, over time and repeat use it will soften clear coats and speed up chalking. Any wax with high quanity of carnuba is excellent to use. I personally use zymol, they have great touch up spray also. Mequiars is also top quality.
