Houston we have a problem..

Because the next Truck will be 5.0

Gen4 has a phantastic number of 4 Sub-Generations.
That's why we have 4, 4.25, 4.5, and now 4.75.

Whole Generations are given by the Cab, Sub-Generations by mayor Engine/Transmissions/Emission upgrades.

Where does one draw the line? You've counted in halves/quarters, so you're motivated to find four breaks to fill the bracket.

Radius arm update 2013/2014 - subgen?
Apple car play 2018 - subgen?
Return to single radiators 2015 - subgen?
Return to CP3 2021 - subgen?

The 2013 2500 is an odd duck. Updated motor with dual radiators and DEF, updated interior, but still four link front. Gen 4.0b or Gen 4.25.1?

Then this site chooses to cross pollinate engine designation with chassis/platform generations. Engine changes don't constitute a subgeneration/facelift.

LB7, LLY, and LBZ are all different engines but all came in a GMT-800. Nobody on the interwebs is insisting on making up terms like GMT-850, GMT-875, etc.

But some forums break it down by engine as you mentioned... and ban nearly all posts about fixing the POS LLY Overheater screw up.

It makes sense if you have lots of technical forum traffic that is engine specific and entirely not relevant to other variants. Subdivide and conquer. On smaller forums it just leads to reduced sharing/traffic in any one genre.

2010-2024 engines have more in common than they do different.

LLY was a turbo inlet elbow and reasonable expectations (rating was 310 hp) away from being a good truck. All the older trucks can be faulted for having smaller cooler stacks and reduced thermal stability than those that came 10-20 years later. It's hard to fault a truck tuned by "egt express" to 400+ hp and 20 years of bird feather crust in the stack.
