Comedy Night Again...

Valley District Fair

A Job Transfer may land me in the area of Binghamton, NY (sp?), and I was wondering what kind of winters to expect. I currently live in Texas, but have lived in the Midwest for 6 years prior to living here, so I am accustom to winter life, but I have heard that winters up there get pretty bad, Lake effect snow and whatnot. Anyway, any oppinions or insight would be appreciated.

My wife's family lives in Binghamton. It is really a nice area of New York. The tri-city area (Binghamton, Endicott, and Johnson City) still has a lot of that small town charm.

You are in for the typical north east winters in Binghamton. You will see a chance of snow from the end of October through the end of March. You are far enough south that you will not see much of the massive lake effect snow that areas like Buffalo do, but can see some major storms that generally come up from the south. Most of the winter you will be dealing with the moderate snow falls, icy roads, and pleanty of salt... . lol

The wife and I are always in the area. We would be happy to show you the "sights" once you settle in. BTW... . IBM is one of the big employers in the area. Is that where you are headed?

I don't work for IBM, but I wish I did.

I am in the Right Of Way business. I deal with landowners in which our project (powerline/natural gas. . etc) involves.

What is the average snowfall for that area of NY?

Thanks for the help and the offer to show the sights, if I end up that way, I will take you up on it.

The snow amount really changes from year to year. Some years are much worse than others. It really all depends I guess. Sorry I can't be more specific.

It's worth moving there for one reason... ... DiRenzo's pizza!! The most unique pizza you will ever have! ;)

Hey Justin...

I think you are close, but, just a smidge off on this. The last 2 years I have been running through there on a nightly basis it been more like "chance of snow" from September to May. I got my first snowfall this past winter in September and my last one the first week of May. I run through there nightly as I turn Syracuse,NY for my freight company.

According to the NOAA the average snowfall measured for this area is about 55 inches. I have seen alot more, but,it depends on how the lake effect snow machine is aimed. Some winters more, some winters less. Just don't believe the old wives tale about it not snowing when its below zero.

As Justin said this is a amazing area with tons of beautiful scenery. A trip around the Finger Lakes region and you will see what I mean. Let us know when you are in place and I'll make a trip up to say hello as I am about 3hrs south.

Good luck and see ya when you get into the Southern Tier... ... ... Andy
