Weekend in Galveston

Actually will be staying in Kemah, but plan to go to Galveston and Katy while we are in the area. If anybody in the area spots a dark red flatbed with stacks, give me a holler. I go by "Slow Roller" on ch. 19.



Any recommendations for sites to see or places to eat in the area? Thanks.

Check out the old sailing ship in Galveston and also the Museum next door about the big storm in 1900, its very interesting. Galveston has a history of Mob domination in the early 1900s especially during prohibition.

The sailing ship (Elissa) is definitely worth a look, other neat things are:



- Lone Star Flight Museum (WWII airplanes a plenty)

- Moody Gardens (housed inside big glass pyramids)

- WWII submarine and ship at the beach

- The Strand



If you run out of stuff to do, there are tons of beach and sea activities, and it is not far from Houston where you can visit NASA, Astroworld, and lots of other interesting stuff

Definately eat at the Kemah Boardwalk. You can't go wrong at any of the restaurants there.



Moody Gardens is nice too.

You'll also be close to the Battleship Texas and the San Jacinto monument, the site Texs won it's independence.

I had found Moody Gardens, the Boardwalk and so on the web. Hadn't come across the ship is sounds interesting. Yep BG, going to Katy so the wife can go to Katy Mills and I can go to Outdoor World. Somewhere along the way I have got to find a set of scooter wheels. I use them for front tires on my wheelchair, about 1/5 the price of regular wheelchair tires. Anyway, used to get them at Wally World and they quit selling em'. Figured somewhere like Academy or at least Outdoor World would have some. Thanks and take care.

If you're into trains at all, the railroad museum in Galveston is pretty cool.

If you're into steaks at all, Taste of Texas has some of the best steaks in town. Black Angus Filet Mignon, cooked medium with lemon pepper and garlic butter, it doesn't get any better than that.



It's at I-10 and Beltway 8, on the inbound side of I-10 right next to Pappasito's. If you're headed to Katy, it's on your way.

Don't know if you'll be coming through Lake Charles or not but if so, might want to stop and eat (if it's the right time of day) at Steamboat Bills, I believe the exit is 30A West bound, it's across I-10 from Harrahs. We ate there last evening, I shouldn't tell this but my son ate 7 pounds of crawfish, I had the fried shrimp, all was great. bg

B. G. is right on that one. Steamboat Bills has some of the best seafood in Lake Charles. Coming back from Houston, you would take the Ryan/Downtown exit and u-turn under the highway and head back west on the service road.



Of course, you also welcome to drop by my place south of Houston for some Bar B Q and diesel talk with a few other dieselheads.

Just got in a little while ago. Great weekend, loved Kemah. Stayed in a little small townhouse type place, ate at the Saltgrass on the Boardwalk, rode Joe's Boardwalk Beast speed boat, took the wife shopping in Katy and Harwin Street, got stuck on 610 several times in traffic, sure it's just the usual tourist stuff but it was different scenery than normal.



Ya'll are right on the money about Steamboat Bills too. I got my B. S. from McNeese and used find an excuse pretty regular to make a run over to Steamboat Bills and pick up a few plates to go.



Hate I missed out on the Dieselhead conversation, can always use some of that. Maybe next trip.

What a coincidence, my wife graduated from McNeese too. I've lived in the area most of my life as well.



Spent many a nights at Strokers Pool hall, that's for sure.

Hell with the Kemah Boardwalk , go down the road a bit to San Leon and eat at the Top Water Grill or go to Crystal Beach on Bolivar Peninsula and eat at the Stingray Restaurant and don't forget to try the bread pudding there.

gitch... ..... Yeah, it is definately a small world. Saw one my Horse Vet. / Prof. from McNeese while I was in Kemah. Both had a good laugh about running into each other. I played a few games in Stroker's myself, used to shoot at Fast Freddies some too.
