Miles on Serpentine?

This weekend, I finally put a big load on the 93, and tested out my Getrag. First big load since the bearing failure in December. Before leaving I installed a set of Fast Coolers, and filled the transmission up with 50W synthetic gear oil. Leaving on Friday morning, loaded up with 27,500# of toys, camping gear, and other stuff, we headed north. Put it up in OD and towed at about 70-72 mph. Within 1 hour the transmission temp was 200*, and by the end of the second hour, temp had pegged the 250* gauge:eek: After a hour break, waiting for a buddy we took off again, and on 2 lane roads, I ran 4th gear at about 58-62 mph, and everything was happy, EGT, Engine temp, and transmission ran about 180-190, and stayed there, then we finally got back on a 70mph road, and the transmission temp started rising. Luckily the stretches of 4 lane were not long, and as soon as 4th was used, then transmission temp would come back down.

What have I figured out? I think the transmission is healthy and fine, as we traveled about 16 hours this weekend running with a strong 24 valve. Lots of shifts, lots of take offs, lots of miles in OD. I just have not decided what the next step should be. My brother's nv4500, does not get hot like this. All the way up I was thinking about adding some 12v pump/cooler setup. I cannot/will not run more then 62 mph in 4th gear, and want to run OD on the interstate. So I need to figure out how to get it done.

I'd still like to know if these temps are truely normal for the trans, or if mine is too tight.

Thanks for reading the idle ramblings. Pictures will come in the near future, from having my 90 out in the mud, timber, sand and rocks.

And just WHY cant you run more than 62mph in 4th? In my pickup, that is less than 2500rpm, more like 21-2200, IIRC. 27K is a lot of weight to be moving with such a small transmission, and behind that engine, which I am sure you just baby to death ;), heat is going to build up. I really dont have any other answers for ya. How tight did you set it up?

It will run more then 62 in 4th gear, but after that the pyro keeps climbing, then when the pyro runs 1200-1250 for very long, engine temp follows. Don't know if its because of my current settings, or what. I've turned the fuel pin away from my ground section, it smokes on take off, but a lot less then it used to, and boost is only about 29-30 now. Its much happier after I limited some fuel.

transmission was set up in the middle of specs. I'll have to go and look in old posts to remember for sure, but it was not at the loose end, or the tight end. I'm just wondering if its always ran this hot, and I've never known it. Everything on the truck worked flawlessly, just a little toasty on the transmission. Bill sent me the link to the transmission pump/filter on the DTR, haven't been able to pull any pics. Maybe a cooler instead of a filter... .....
