Fivers and motorcycles

I passed a weigh station the other day while towing my TT. It said all trucks over 6 tons should stop (which I am). It was closed, but it made me wonder. Do we have to stop at weigh stations with a TT? Is it different from state to state? I'm getting ready for a cross country trip, and I've never weighed this much before. Thanks.

I've been towing and driving (motorhomes and 5th wheels) for over 30 years. I have never stopped at a weigh station and have never been pulled over because of it. This is coast to coast and Canada. I don't think I missed any states. I was always heavy enough to stop per the signs posted as to weight. I did have a friend who stopped a couple of times and they basically lectured him that this was for commercial vehicles and they were not interested in RV's, please don't clog up our facilities. He quit stopping too.

Dieselnerd got it. Commercial has to stop. There's numerous threads on this if you search the archives but the bottom line is if you don't have a DOT # on your truck don't bother.

I drove proffesionally for 15 years and have pulled TTs and FWs for another 20. I can tell you in 1,500,000 plus miles on the road I have never seen an instance where a TT or a FW has had to pull on a scale for DOT,ICC,State patrol,or local police. This is almost every state in the union and Canada. If you do pull into a weigh station, most likely you will be told as above"please do not do this again as it slows our facilitys down". . Not to mention getting the either laughed or ticking off its regular clients.....

Try to keep your rigs within the GCVW and don't sweat the weight stations. Have fun, thats what RVs are all about. The weigh stations are there for comercial vehicles PERIOD. Are you getting paid to haul a load?If not don't sweat it... ... Too many people in RVs have had the crap scared out of them by some well meaning idiots. I have seen people counting pounds and ounces to obtain a legal weight. Relax a little and look at your vehicle. Is it low in the rear?does it sway in the wind?Is the handleing poor?If so your weight is most likely not balanced or you might be overweight. Take it to your local grain store or truckstop and have it weighed. Balance or remove accordingly. And try it again. Relax a little its fun pulling a load around with a Cummins... ... ... ...

The worst thing that I have seen happen to a TT was a safety check. Lights, safety chains, brakes, papers, and maybe(if it looks grossly overloaded!)they will ask you if you are overweight. I have not ever heard of them pulling you to any scale for verification.

For commercial only, and in some of the western states, according to the signs, "All vehicles hauling livestock".
I've stopped at some, and when I tell 'em it's just my own horses, they say, "well, you didn't need to stop", others want to see all the papers, brand registration, health certificates, etc. Who knows?
According to the Idaho State Police, you have to stop if you have any livestock, but they won't chase you down if you don't stop (unless you're an 18 wheeler cattle hauler).
At the weigh station on the little 2-lane highway just outside of town, I never stop. I asked Steve, the guy who runs it if I should stop, he said, "only if you want a cup of coffee".

I have a Weigh station right down the street from me in CT and i asked them about that and they said if its not commercial, then you dont have to stop. So you are safe in CT also.
