In Calif. , they tax you on everything. One tax is on the un-laden weight of your truck. When I got my permanent registration for my truck, it said that my '01. 5,QC,SB,2WD weighed in at 6130lbs. I went to a truck scale and got the truck weight certified. It only weighed in at 5750lbs. Weighing at under 6000lbs makes my weight fees $50 dollars cheaper per year! $5 dollar weight certificate saved me $$$$$! Don't know about you guys in other states but maybe worth a check. FYI

I'm sooooo glad I don't live there anymore(Lompoc). I just got my renewal for my '00 QC2500 4x4(wt 7320 lbs),and it's only $83 bucks!

ps. You know,I could still save another $10 bucks ontop of that if I go in and tell them I don't haul any hazardous chemicals.

Yeh Mike, The way things are going in this state we are soon going to have to have Haz placards on our vehicles for the fuel in our tanks and the lead in the batteries under our hoods!

Just out of curiosity..... I weighed my truck and flatbed this weekend when I went to the landfill. Empty I weighed 9160. It's an 18 ft flatbed rated for 10,000 GVW. When I bought it they said it weighed 2000 lbs. That would put my truck at about 7000. I thought that's about what these trucks weighed empty.

Not true Mike. I tried to get the $10. registration renewal discount this year... I found out you can't haul ANYTHING (i. e. , ANYTHING) in the bed of your truck in order to get the discount. I repeat, ANYTHING! What kind of political BS is that anyway?

Hey Mike... I've seen ya drive! YOU are hazardous! If ya want that discount, you would have to swear that only your wife drives it. LOL!!!
Can only imagine your drive with jmbrowning and the BB...

In Nevada, license fees are based upon what the State says your truck's worth. They depreciate that value annually, which lowers the renewal a little each year. The first time I licensed my truck (1999) the annual fee was $495. 00! I think Califonia has us beat tho.

Consider yourself lucky. My buddy just registered his 2001 4x4, reg. cab SLT here in Colorado, for $780. This was for rec. (recreational) truck plates, which means you can't use it commercially. Mine were $260, also for rec truck plates (I saved $36 annually over regular truck plates. )

Hey John,
Boy that is BS! I guess it's a good thing I didn't try to get that discounted from my renewal... I figured what's $10 bucks anyway.

Rob,
Next time you want to go to Disneyland,DON'T!
Just let me hook up the BB again. Heck-uv-alot cheaper! #ad

Geez Oh Peets! I feel bad for you guys. When I lived it TN. it was $23 per year regardless of its weight, value, or year built, as long as it was a passenger vehicle, not commercial. Now I'm in MI. , and this year it's going to be $107 (last year $118. ) I've been cry-babying about $107 (and have let my plate expire), I guess I really don't have anything to cry about. I'd have to take out a loan to pay for registration if I lived in the same state as some of you guys. #ad

BTW, $107 is 9. 32% less than $118. If 9. 32% is the approx. depreciation, that would mean my $34,100 truck is worth about $30,921. That's $3,179 worth of depreciation.

Just thinking out loud there, but does that sound about right?

When I used to live inThe peoples Republic of California my truck was 20 years old and had to have comercial plates to put any thing in the bed and it was a $275. 00 bite in the butt. Then I found out you could get House car plates with a slide in camper or a Shell but couldnt take it off. So I did that and the fee was $50. 00. By getting a personalized plate nobody knew what kind off plate it was and I took off the shell and saved $175. 00 a year. Dont you hate a government that makes you scheme to avoid excessive taxes?

I have a 97 3500 extended cab with a 10' flatbed leased to a trucking company here in Tx. My truck weighs 8450 lbs empty and I have it registered for 15,000 lbs. That cost $138. 55 a yr. I don't pull a trailer so all that weight is just for the truck.

The registration fee on my 2001 will be over $900 next year, depreciating every year after that. They need lots of taxes in Kentucky to pay for having way too many state (storm)troopers out on the road, overzealously enforcing ridiculously low speed limits. I ran a simple errand in Lexington yesterday, counted 9 city cops, and 7 state troopers, all in a total of driving 20 miles round trip.

my truck has comercial plates because I do haul anything and everything and in good ol California it will cost be about $780 next year

FYI - In Texas, your license fee is for trucks is based on the carrying capacity. .

Where I live now, it's based on value. . Luckily I don't have to pay for year 2000 since we moved here after the cutoff.

I swore I wouldn't buy a new truck in Kalifornia, but I did anyway. I paid over $3000 in sales tax, and another $800+ in license/weight fees on my 2001. 5 ETH.

This winter, I'm driving home to Florida and Tennessee to see family, and while in TN, I'm going to transfer the registration there, as is the case with my trailer and cars. I can transfer my old plate and pay $23 (as somebody else here posted).

It's a waste of the reg money, but at least it'll be done and I don't have to burden my sister with a power of attorney to have her do it.

I hate this **** state; I can't wait to get out. BUT, nowhere else (yet) can I earn the same living I do here.

Rob

In Maryland its $83. 50 for TWO years. And I complain about writing that check! Doesn't matter if its commercial use. Those fees you guys are quoting are outrageous.
