Use caution RobG! A while back I heard of somebody getting caught and the reg. fees were nothing compared to the penalties! Additionally, if you are avoiding smog on your cars it might really get bad. I believe that if a vehicle is in a state for a certain time period it is required to be registered in that state. Out-of-state plates are also more prone to picking up speeding tickets. This is when the officer says, who's car is this your driving? Good luck,

In Illinois we use to pay $48 for non comercial use. They raised it to $78 last year and I been *****in. After hearing about California I'm going to write a thank you letter to my Govenor. Those high wages in Cal are to pay that high cost of living. Its a trade off. Who passed all those *****in laws in Cal anyway. Someone needs to vote those politicians out of office.

In California ALL P/U's - including El Caminos, Suburu BRATS, Rancheros, etc - are registered as commercial vehicles unless they have a PERMANATELY attached 'living quarters'. I've tried to get around this one - there isn't any good way. Commercial registration gets the weight fee - based on actual weight - added on. I wish we had the option of registering Commercial or Non-commercial - I don't haul anything for money. My friend got cited on two occasions driving a P/U that was registered as a house car - camper shell. He had removed the shell to haul his furniture. Both times it was CHP that cited him. Most local police/sheriff don't know/care about commercial vs house car registration.

A California resident has 20 days from entry (of vehicle) to register an out of state vehicle that he owns. Just about anything qualifies as residency - working, going to school, register to vote, CA drivers license. If you get cited the penalities start from the date of entry - have fun proving this one - and add up pretty darn quick.

Personally, I have been cited twice by the CHP for 'improperly registered/out of state' vehicles - once with New Hampshire plates, once with New Mexico plates. I was stopped for the registration only - no moving violation. The charges were dismissed both times - the vehicles belonged to my father were registered to his home address but I was on the title as 'AND' so there wasn't a lot of questions about 'where did you get this truck'.

Florida you pay "declared GVW" on Pickups(vans do not have to declare GVW, just go with GVWR). I declared 9,999 pounds and pay around $83 a year. $200 on the FL60 at 23,000,can go to 25,999 if I need to for same price.

RobG,
Listen to dresslered and Brian Meadows, because they're right. If/when you get pulled over by the police or highway patrol and your California driver license doesn't match you Tennesee plates, you'll be screwed.

If that's true Mike, one should probably hope for a babe state trooper. #ad
Woohoo

Frank, when I purchased my Ram in June of '98 my license tabs were $840. #ad
Approximately $825. the following year #ad
Since the voter approved license structure went into effect my license tabs plummeted to $113. #ad

... . just read your post illflem. I'll have to answer your question with: I don't know... although, they were very explicit about not "hauling" ANYTHING. I'm wondering why the tabs for your '95 Rams were $1200. per year. Were these Rams registered for commercial use? Maybe the D. M. V. thinks 12v Rams are worth more than 24v Rams. #ad

My plates in Lousiana cost $38 and they last for 4 years (every year you need a new safety sticker $10)

That is the only thing I will miss about this state.

Alaska is $246/2 yr. They use the curb weight of truck. If you are under 6000 there is a substantial savings, but of course, with a diesel... . However, the permanent fund dividend + no state income tax sorta balances it out!

I just renewed my tabs in Washington, and it cost me $66! Woo-Hoo! $3 filing fee, $3 Sub-Agent Fee and $60 for the actual tabs. Truck tabs are based on the weight of the truck, so I asked why I was paying for a 10,000 lb truck that has a stated GVW of 8800 lbs. Didn't get an answer though.

Oh well, $66 is CHEAP for me. Two years ago, before the car tab initiative, I paid $600 for my Grand Cherokee. Then, after the $30 intiative, I paid $120. Now, I'm paying $66. SCORE!
