Toy Hauler Question

New Gooseneck

The 19.5s are a good idea but with the extra inches and rotating mass (they are heavy) the gasser would not like it one bit with the trailer weight also. You want a Cummins anyway!
For pulling this, the Cummins is what I need. I truly do hate to get rid of the 6.4 for daily chores, etc. It is so handy, and short trips don't give it fits.

I'm not the guy to give advise since I have WAY too many vehicles. But, is keeping the 6.4 as you daily driver and adding a dedicated heavy tow vehicle for your trailer a possibility?

That would be right up my alley. Will have to discuss.

DRW with AISIN and 3.42's are good to 29k over that 4.10's. Forget the "COMPROMISE" 3.73's.

The little bit I have read about the "rumored" ZF trans for the new trucks makes it sound like their strategy is to push taller, numerically lower, final drive ratios. Speculation at this point.

Simply look at the ONE 3.42 ratio on SRW's, they know it works well! 6th for economy and 5th for towing heavy, same RPM as my 4.10 in 6th.

3.42 may "work" but it doesn't mean its the best for all.

I'd personally rather have something along the lines of 3.73 - 3.90. Better acceleration under load, better use of EB due to higher rpms, less stress on driveline.

Don't take me wrong guys. I favor lower rear gears, and always have. I ordered this gasser with 4.10s, and would have gotten 4.56s like they used to offer in the PW if they offered them. In the end, it has to be on the order sheet.

Agree 100%,, I really wish they would give more options for the SRW guys - although it looks like you will be bypassing that option, imagine towing your setup in your current truck with 3.42's! It would be a worse experience hands down. I've hauled loads similar in combined weight as yours but at low speed and poor secondary roads and fields. 3.42's really struggle at low speeds and soft terrain. Lower gears are just better for work, these trucks are meant for work and it baffles me why only one gear choice when multiple gear options are available in literally everything else (DRW, gassers, half tons, etc).

JR have you ever towed HEAVY with an AISIN and 3.42’s? I have towed around 26k with that exact combo. It took off on grade with ease and pulled thru the gears no problem.

I towed well over 1/2 of my 65k at 28-29k with my 11 HO DRW 68rfe 3.42’s. It towed great. ONLY issue was getting the load rolling on a grade. The Fact is the AISIN solves that issue with its lower starting gears.

RAM agreed simlply look at the SAE tow ratings they rate the DRW 3.42 4x4 AISIN at around 29k combined.

I get what you continue to preach. I also get that the Aisin is a better trans on paper and most likely the real world. BUT until you get off the hard pan (asphalt) and start using your truck in a different manner than what you have always used it for... maybe just maybe you might concede a tall gear ratio isnt for everyone.

Just my two cents... the highest RATED Ram for GCWR is the Ram 3500 DRW 6.7L Aisin with 4.10s max tow. I understand what JR wants. I personally outgrew two Rams for GCWR. You see I'm driving a 5500 with 4.88s. Too bad Ram doesn't offer SRW 3500 with 4.10s too.

Cheers, Ron

Thought this was the Towing, Hauling and RV section??? Towing is what I am referring to. I have a lot of real world mileage in this arena. But hey I’m PREACHING.

Seriously 4.10’s with AISIN in a SRW what will that gain you?

Ron,
SRW 3500 wouldn't gain anything with 4.10s without higher rated tires and axle. should've caveated that. My first statement was real world about drw 3500 and my second one about srw 3500 was incomplete hypothetical.

There is lots more to towing than down the freeway in top gear. I'm sorry you don't get that .

Sorry for sidetracking your threadTFucili.
