Does anyone know the approximate weight of a standard factory steel pickup bed complete with tailgate and dually fenders?

I'm curious about the weight differential between a factory pickup bed and an aftermarket steel flatbed or towing bed.

bed

my friend and i took off the bed of my truck, it was heavy for two guys. so a good est would be 375-425lbs ? my new aluminum bed is 650-700 lbs. kp

kp,

Thanks for the report. I had guessed 400# but I was thinking without the tailgate. Did you and your friend lift it off with the tailgate still on or removed?

Who is the manufacturer of your aluminum truck bed? Do they have a website?

harvey, the tail gate was off. i made my own bed 2700$ in aluminum ,etc there is a real good bed builder in WV. TG mfg. kp:cool:

KP,

Thanks. From your experience I'd guess removal of a standard pickup bed reduces the truck's weight by about 500# including the tailgate.

My grandson lives in WV. I'll look on the web to see if "TG Mfg" has a website.

Have you looked into these manufacturers of steel beds?

Home Page

or

J&I Manufacturing - Madill, Oklahoma - Truck Beds, WW Trailers, Tophat Trailers, Steel, Fencing, Farm and Ranch Supplies

Or are you specifically looking for an aluminum bed?

They're both in Madill, Oklahoma (a little closer than WV)

Mike

Mike,

Yes, I've looked at CMs at several Dodge dealers and the local CM dealer here in Lubbock plus I've looked lots of them over wherever I've seen them. I've looked at several JI beds on trucks that I've seen around at truck stops and restaurants also.

I visited a buddy and fellow TDR member who lives in Thackerville, OK a few weeks ago and we drove up to Ada and visited Chaprell Dodge and test drove a 4500. It was the first 4500 either of us had seen. Later we detoured over to Madill to visit the CM and JI plants. We were outside the fence looking over the fence at CM beds and a fellow inside starting walking our way. I expected him to say we couldn't be there and run us off but instead he invited us in to look around. He gave us a 30 minute tour and explanation of all the products. A real friendly helpful guy. By the time we left it was after closing time and my friend's "boss" was expecting him home for supper so we had to skip J I Mfg.

I think I like the CM bed best and that is most likely what I'll end up with.

Thanks. I checked their website. They are nice looking beds also.

CM beds look good enough for my needs and I think one of them will be cheaper and easier to buy because they are built in a small town in OK not far from the Red River and they have dealers all over TX.
