I've only had the truck(automatic, 04. 5) for two months and now its making a really weird noise. I think its the transmission or transfer case, cant really tell. I haven't had a chance to check fluids. The noise is a loud whinning noise that seems to get louder when I let off the gas, but still is pretty random when it occurs. It comes and goes as the truck shifts which makes me think it the transmission. Started about 1 week ago, and gets a little louder each day. Its worse when the truck is cold. Ive been using 4 wheel drive a lot, but drove with 4wd in and out, still makes the noise either way.

Pleas help!

My truck has a howl to it as well when letting off the fuel - in nuetral, park and in drive - it's worse when cold as well. I'm thinking turbo, intercooler leak, or exhaust resonation but..... there are other similar threads on this as well. Does yours make the noise in neutral and park?

does it happen when the truck is at op. temp. ? and does the truck work fine, go through the gears normally? not sure if you would be low on fluid but wouldn't hurt to check. i would take it back to dealer if under warrenty still. otherwise start by getting some gauges. try to listen where it's coming from. just crawl under, if it's not too cold out, and check out by the trans and fuel tank.

best of luck

I have an 05 3500 and I had a similar noise while the drive train was cold. Once everything heated up no more noise. I only heard it below 30 MPH while off the fuel. It turned out to be the carrier bearing on the drive shaft. The dealer said they have replaced a few of them, even had one on the shelf it that tells you anything. Just thought I would throw that out there hopefully it helps. . These noises can be enough to drive one nuts. . ROB

Spray a little WD-40 on your pinion seal and see what happens. I had one replaced on my '01 under warranty 'cause it was driving me nuts. Had another one go crazy, can't remember which truck it was on. That one went away on it's own. I guess they're supposed to leak enough to keep themsleves lubed up and every now and then they don't.

Could you have a loose belt? Maybe the alternator of A/C is slipping when you change speeds. I had an '85 Olds that did that.
