Weird "pecking ,Ticking noise"

Hey Guys,

I have a Pecking noise that reminds me of a lifter on a gasoline engine. It will speed up with the engine and the noise is real loud at each fender not as much from the front of the engine at idle. The engine has 173,000 and the noise has been intermittent since about 30,000 and of course the dealer would never find anything now it is consisent. I have pulled 3 oil analysis from Schaeffer's oil and all of the metals levels are fine. Could this be the valve adjustment? Does diesels have lifters? I do not know much about diesels but have extensive knowledge of gasoline. I have notice some power loss when pulling hills with about 10,000 lbs. it slows down and that is not good when Ferds are passing you :{ . I guess I could just take it all apart . Anyway I would appreciate and ideas or anyone else who had this issue.

I'd start off with a valve adjustment... speaking of which, I need to do mine !

I have something similar, but it sounds like a nicked tooth on something like the CP3 pump gear. I have only 40K miles. When is the normal valve adjustment due? It is more anoying than anything else. Mine is only at idle or just off idle.

How exactally do you go about adjusting the valves? My truck had 174,000 on it and I dont think they were ever adjusted.

One more note it does not do it when the engine is first started once it warms up it starts pecking.

I would suspect and injector going bad possibly. However at your mileage you are over due for a valve adjustment. I would do the adjustment first as a matter of preventative maintenance and to insure that is not causing the trouble. I did my 03 at 37500 and found loose ones.

My book says 100,000 miles, I currently have 112. 3 on mine .

Yeah I know about the over due ... but this has been a noise since about 30,000 miles. . but you are right try to eliminate as many possibilities as possible.

I had the same porblem since day one with my truck. Dealer stated "normal diesel noise, compare to another. " When I did that and pointed out my noise, they just said it was louder than the rest. I got tired of it and at 10K pulled the valve cover myself and exh. valve on cyl. #5 and #6 where . 010" to large of a gap,. I adjusted it and the noise is now gone!



I would definentely start with the valve adjustment and go from there.

Ok, so maybe a step by step would help. I've had the cover off of my 02 to replace injectors but that was about it. I'd love to get rid of the infamous TICK. Thanks!

Looks pretty easy. However, I still don't have the slightest clue how to set the engine up so the valves can be measured. Further more, I don't know where to measure the valves. I'm an aircraft mechanic so I have the basic skills, just not the specific knowledge. I assume the valves are measured with the crank in a certain position and each valve at it's highest or lowest point. Whichever it calls for.

IMO, I wouldn't suggest anyone who has not done valve adjustments before to try it without the manual. If you have basic mechanical skills, never done a valve adjustment but do have a manual then your probably ok.



Bottom line is to get the manual and best way is on CD. You should have it if you are going to work on your truck anyway.



The one I linked to is for an 01 and you could contact the seller for an 05. If I remember this seller is the same one I bought my 03 and 05 from.

I echo everything Matt says here. I've never done the valve adjustment, but won't hesitate to do so when the time comes using the manual.
