3 ND UPDATE:

took a loaded flatbed trailer for a measured distance and than hooked a new 2006 to the same load , same distance , feel both rearend covers and mine is hot,hot , the 2006 is luke warm and you can leave your hand right on it, so with all the test i have done , we have narrowed it down to the center section of the rearend , i belive carrier bearings - will call my local service man at the dealership to advise on whats next - will up date when i have more news

4 TH UPDATE: took out front driveshaft and drove the truck and noise is still there , service manager at the dealer said he would use a vibration analyzer this weekend on my truck - it's driving me crazy - i want it fixed like yesterday - damn dodge diesel trucks - first time i've ever said that.

I JUST WANT IT FIXED - any one know the number to carlson dodge ?

i heard they have dealt alot with this problem.

5 TH UPDATE: took the truck to massdiesel and had scott look at it finally, its in the rearend - took off the driveshaft to check the backlash and there is alot , spec call for 5 - 7 thousands , i bet you i have 30 thousands or more . so now i/m going to see if i can fight with the dealer and get a new ring and pinion and everything new inside the rear end housing , will report back.

6 TH UPDATE: just for the hell of it , i drained the amsoil out of it and put in some royal purple , drove about 100 miles and still no difference , driving me crazy ! DOES SOMEONE KNOW THE SECRET TO FIX THIS ?

Lonewolf, If you have less than 70k on the truck it is under warranty. Take it in to the dealer.

i am - he's know about it - he know's i am anal and have been checking one thing at a time to try tofix this on my own - suppose to be getting from dc and machine that pinpoints sonic vibration and noise's , just waiting for it to come in -

I am going to , i already called and let him know whats going on but i want to isolate the problem first so its not sitting at the dealer for a week while they do all there testing , i did all the testing , today i have found the problem:

i put the front drive shaft in and took the rear one out and put it in 4 high and took her down the road. BINGO : NOISE IS GONE - SO I HAVE NARROWED IT TO THE REAR END , the drive shaft has brand new u joints , so monday morning i'll call the dealer and tell them what i have found , the service manager is a good guy , he knows me and he know i'm anal about my truck , well everything i own so there shouldn't be a problem - ring and pinion look fine , wear marks are very good, must be the bearings...

WILL REPORT BACK TO YOU ALL - AS I KNOW THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH WITH DODGE DIESEL TRUCKS

Dodge should be glad they have Cummins, because other than interesting designs they have nothing else going for them, well thats not true the brakes on these trucks are very nice. But I won't buy another new Dodge, perhaps an old 12v but not another new one, this has been the most expensive vehicle I have owned and no gentlemen I am not talking about the various mods and the problems those have caused (there have been a few and they are on ME).

See my last line in post #6 above.

What about that other 1%? Check your rear diff, or have someone do it that knows what they are looking at... . not the dealer!

OK, let's try this again... in the same box here! Notice my last couple of words from post #6..... "not the dealer"!!! In other words, take it to an actual rear end shop that does nothing but differential and gear work.

why take it to someone else if its covered and let the dealer pay for it , why should i pay for something thats covered ,

To give yourself a better chance of getting your truck fixed right, the first time.

your right in saying that , i can't agree with you more, but i want them to spend a $ 250. 00 - $ 1000. 00 out of there pockets and if they don t fix it right i'll keep bringing it back and *****in...

LONEWOLF, what dealr are you going to? Is it a good one? I"ve found the five-star dealers the only ones worth going to at all. Plant dodge/chrysler in franklin MA seems OK... I haven't had them work on my truck, but they seem pretty reasonable to deal with (I've ordered parts from them a few or more times now... ). It might be worth checking them out. If you are like me, you'll kinda 'interview' them before letting them in the cab...

Framingham Dodge in MA went out- which is bad, those guys were good, they had a couple of decent diesel mechanics there...

Good luck.

No NOT THE FRIKIN (is that ok to say i hope so) DEALER. i have seen their work first hand and repaired alot of rearends they couldnt fix. this is why most dealers "when in doubt simply swap out". its actually cheaper for them too that way but much more expensive for the customer. cuz techs on flat rate will make a killing off swapping it out cuz it pays well and takes very little time and get to the next vehicle quicker. so if they did your rear you can bet on a flat rate tech trying to get quick and just getting the truck going again, not making sure if it is the proper pattern that AAM or Dana wants

the good ones are truly a rare breed and scattered around the company. their are even imposter rearend shops so I found out when I ordered a custom built axle assembly from the other side of the country. I spent $4,700 on it and they didnt set up it up right. the didnt set up their jig right so the brackets had to be torched and re done in right location. then the gear pattern was very bad. I found out when I swapped the differential that the pinion was not set deep enough so I had to do a complete gear job instead of just swapping shims under carrier bearing. I also paid for chromoly shafts when I bought the axle assembly and the simply cut down and resplined stock shafts then machine them for the full circle snap rings for my CTM u-joints (now OX).

So all I am saying is good shops are a rare breed even if they have a advertisement in the back of a 4wd magazine that advertises custom axle assemblies like foothill offroad did to lure me to them and end up un satisfied

OK ? LET'S GO THREW THIS AGAIN - TRUCK IS STILL COVERED , LET THE DEALER PAY FOR IT , I STILL HAVE ANOTHER 30,000 MILES COVERED , SO WHY WOULD I WANT TO PAY ANY MONEY OUT OF MY POCKET TO LET SOMEONE FIX IT IF THR TRUCK IS COVERED AND THE DEALER IS PAYING FOR EVERYTHING ?
