Ok, here is the deal, today on the way home from work the transmission started making a sound that I have never even heard about from 2 years of reading this site. Imagine a key cutter and the serrated wheel that cuts the lobes on the key, just as the wheel finishes the cut and runs back over it, That is exactly and I mean exactly what this sounds like. It only does it in fifth gear and when you push in the clutch and take it out of gear it still does it and sometimes it will stop when you take it out of gear. It comes and goes as you drive. It isn't constantly doing it. It sounds like maybe something high speed thing rotating on a shaft or something.

Any ideas?

You know Bill, it made the sound again this morning and then went away. On the way home I got on the hiway and was going throught the gears and it wouldn't shift into 5th. I had to stop and turn off the engine before it would go into 5th gear. That is the only time it has done that. So I've gone down and gotten a new 5th gear nut and am going to check it out tomorrow. It's just I've never heard of a 5th gear that comes off making any kind of noise.

Looks like the nut on shaft is letting go . Fifth gear is on the way out . Have it checked after checking post on fifth gear loss in archives. Ron in Metro Louisville KY Wish you luck. Ron

Yeah, that's what I figured. Went and bought new oil for the transmission for when I pull the tail shaft. Can you believe it, 16 bucks a quart. Highway robbery.
