I did it on a race truck and it didn't work. Well we did add two more gears. Came loose and punched a hole in the rear cover. Oiled the track down pretty good. I won't do that again.

People do it on Jeeps and offroad trucks all the time. I wouldn't want to drive a truck like this with a welded rear, esp. every day.
 
welded a dana 60, didn't use the recommended nickel rods, one chunck of weld shot throught the cover after about 10 thousand miles. welded up the hole, and went for another 20 thousand. sold the truck, haven't seen it since. use the nickel rods though if you do it. most times it is all about the axle strength, of which you have plenty.
