Tips For Rv Transporting

towing beyond GCWR

I'am going to strengthen the receiver hitch that was put on the back of my 5th wheel camper for pulling the boat. Is there anything I should be concerned about like disconnecting the battery or anything else?

Thanks ahead of time.

It's always a good idea to disconnect the battery when you are welding on anything. Most of the time, it won't matter, but if you fry your inverter you will be sorry. To me it's worth the 5 minutes to disconnect the battery rather than spend a couple of hours and $100 to replace it!!

Welding on a vehicle

In addition to the previous replys, always put your ground as close to your welding as possible. Use the correct rod and dont set yourself up for a broken weldment by improperly stressing the weld (design) or welding perpendicular to the frame (on the frame). If you use low hydrogen rod make sure it is from a fresh can and/ or has been kept at an elevated temperature to eliminate hydrogen porosity. Your exact modification is unknown so this reply is general. Be careful. Hope this helps. Greg

Thanks for the advice guys. I bought a low end flux wire welder and to say the least that's what I got, a $170. 00 peice of junk, that or my welding skills have deteriorated since the last time I welded many years ago. :eek: :{

Oh well the receiver hitch is welding on with three cross braces by a professional. The one I was going to improve upon was the one weld on the bumper. Really don't even need that one but I like things over built. I could have just bought two pieces of iron, bolts and made a clamp but liked the idea of a weld better.
