Throttle started acting up today. Cruising low rpm, give it throttle and nothing, very, VERY minimal acceleration, almost like I barely pushed more on the throttle. No check engine light. SO. . I've been reading and need input.

BTW - I have 73k miles right now.

1. I've read that the injection pump is covered 5 years/100k mi. Is this correct?

2. Where is the APPS and what is the correct procedure to reset it?

3. I want to change the lift pump, ASAP, so what should I go with? Would a factory replacement unit also be prone to the same problems?

Thanks

Eric

yeah, i'm getting on that SOON... You'll have to forgive my ignorance... Where am I supposed to tap into to pickup fuel pressure?

On mine there is a Schrader fitting on the inlet side of the Inj. pump. Geno's has a hose all made up for installing a gauge.

i don't know if it makes a difference... you can sometimes hear the engine randomly loading and unloading a very very very minimal amount at idle sometimes, yes A/C off. Also, if i'm rolling, and throw it in neutral, the engine will hunt 150-200 rpm for an idle until I come to a stop...

1. Yes

2. Right above the injection pump... has the black plastic cover. Disconnect the negative battery cables for at least a couple of hours (you'll get all kinds of opinions on how long, but I do it over night). Hook them back up. . turn the ignition key to run, and SLOWLY push the throttle to the floor and back up three times. Start and drive as usual.

3. I can't remember if the lift pump is covered under the 100K. If it isn't, buy a replacement pump from Cummins and not the dealer unless you don't mind paying double. Don't replace the pump until you can verify it's dead or nearly so.

Have you checked for codes? If you get a 0216 I'd go to the dealer and argue like hell for a new VP44, and of course they can perform diagnosis on fuel pressure, etc.

Here the Recommeded procedure it Seemed to work better on my truck . and a friends

1. Set parking brake

2. Disconnect negative battery cables on both batteries

3. Turn ignition key to run(to drain any remaining capacitors)

4. Let truck sit for 30 minutes( this is the recommended minimum)

5. Return ignition to OFF position

6. Reconnect both batteries and secure, not a timed event

7. Turn key to run position(not start) and depress accelerator pedal slowly all the way to the floor

8. Allow pedal to return to top position slowly

9. Turn ignition switch OFF

10. Release parking brake
