Been running the egt's all spring/summer, looks good. Cruising 5-700 deg. at 65, empty, peaking at 1000 hard acceleration (20 psi boost). Looks like room to turn up the pump... Then I put on the slide-in camper... now it'll go to 1150 or higher just on mild uphill grades at 65.

I plan to keep the temps under 1150... but what is safe for long uphill pulls?

How much will putting the 18. 5cm housing back on lower it? What about a 4" exhaust (right now the over-axle hump is gone, dumping in front of rear axle)?

The camper will only be on another couple of months, then it should be ok again.

Thanks,

John

You didnt say what housing you have on there now. If it's a 16, leave it. If smaller, then it's up to you.

You should be ok at 1300 all day long. Some may flame me for this, but BANKS recommends it, and they arent known for pushing the envelope.

The added wind resistance will add to engine load, heating up your EGTs.

You still have the stock impellar? If so, an HTT upgrade may take your temps back down.

Oh, that IS hilarious Daniel! :-laf:-laf

Max sustained EGT's on the 12V are usually 1250-1300 with no worries. You can even push 1500 for a few minutes with no harm.

You didn't say what boost was when you saw the EGT's at those levels. That will help you tell if the turbo is a little short in the air department.

Loading will generally run the EGT's up a bit more and a tweak to the pump a bit more yet. Probably need alittle more/better air between 20 and 30 psi like the most of these trucks. :)

one thing i did on my stock turbo to lower the egt was to totally block off the waste gate

first i ran a bolt with a lock nut thru the rear cover(to hold the door all the way closed)

i eventually removed the trap door part, drilled and taped the housing for a 3/4" pipe plug. that lowered the temps some as i guess that waste gate door leaks a little.

don

ps - if you try this dont use a brass plug, it has to be steel

they say alum starts to melt at 1200*f (some alum), brass must melt right around there too... lol

Wow, ok, looks like I can pull 65 ok on the highway, then... FWIW, my two stroke snowmobile would be toast at 1250 for just a min...

Boost cruising now is more like 8-10 psi (was 5-7), more when pulling a hill, but nowhere near the 20 I see when accellerating hard in 4th, just before defuel. As far as I know, the turbo is all stock, except (I'm pretty sure, but I didn't install, and cannot find anything to positively identify) the 16cm housing. I am running the AFE proguard7, inside stock housing. I do have a Greenleaf intake tube 'bout ready to bolt on... guess this would be a good chance to see any diff in temps...

Thanks for the help,

John

Just a closing note... ran it again last weekend... found that at the end of a long climb, on a steepening grade that I couldn't maintain speed at the top of, that temps peaked at 1200. Sounds like I'm at the edge of "stupid proof", which may not be safe for me, but I'll go with it.

If I missed it, where do you have the probe, pre turbo hopefully?
