I went to the first tuesday night test n tune of the year tonight. There was very few cars so I figured what the heck... I will see what the ram runs. Only BOMBs are an EZ box K&N RE-0880 and a flowmaster muffler. Heres what it did

First run

ET=16. 79@81

Spun real hard I shifted it pretty easy.

Second run(did not cool down just hot lapped it)

ET=16. 20@82. 54

Still spun... stomp shifted it... spun pretty bad hitting third.

Third run WITHOUT EZ BOX!!

18. 18@74

Wow I had no idea the EZ helped that much. I did however almost kill it do to the severe lack of power. I think if I would have left good I would not have done better than an 18. 00

I kept trying to hard after those runs. . I let it cool down outside and ran it a few more times. Track was greasy and kept spinning real bad when I hit third

The highest boost reading i saw was 26PSI with a high EGT of 1000 pre turbo.

I was very pleased... to be honest I was betting on a mid 17 second run. I tried a dry hop leaving in first gear... bad idea doesnt last long enough and I am sure a good hard shift into second would cause some severe tire spin. My transmission doesn't seem to mind the stomp shifting one bit. It goes right into gear without a click or a grind even. I still let off to hit fifth gear though. Makes the money i spent on the EZ box seem a whole lot more worth it than before. 2 seconds and 10mph in the quarter with some MPG on top of that. I think in cooler weather it would go a 15. 90... it was 93* according to the trucks thermo.

3. 54 rear and with whatever the stock 2wd michelins are. I was pretty happy with it as I said. I don't plan on doing any more bombing anytime soon. Thats what the car is for!!

1/4 mile ET's

Good runs! Was this the first runs for you and truck?

Last week I ran for the first time in PHX AZ at FireBird Raceway.

Had a Blast. I had same problem. Just spinning tires!! I would start out very easy in second then mash it in third. Still spinning tire/s even when shifting into 4th and a little in 5th. I need to fix my LSD or install a posi and add ladder bars then some tires.

My times at 7,400lbs & Track temp over 100deg.

My three best were 15. 31 et to 15. 49 et all at 92 mph. I am sure it would be low 14's if I could launch better. and probably in the lr better with a Automatic Trans.

I have been drag racing since I was 16 am 22 now. First time for the truck with the clocks on. I ran it at the midnight drags(street racing type deal. . pick your race lay down some cash. . no times only winlights). I outran some half drunk moron in a 1/2 dodge. I went out to watch a friend of mine run last night and ended up getting bored lol. Later in the year when its cooler I am going to see if it will hit the 15s.

How do you launch?? I left at 1900RPM then just swaped pedals. Bogs a little bit then comes to life and starts to spin a little. Stomp shift third and it spins real bad. . but its glued after that

Bad340Fish,

Same: I let out the clutch easy at 2000 trying not to spin then stepped down as fast as tires allowed . Into Third I would let up to 3/4 throttle to keep down wheel hop/spin then stomp shift into 4th. Still get wheel spin/hop and then stomp shift into 5th. some wheel spin but not to much then stomp into 6th. Can't wait to get this torque to the ground!! :D

Hey, Bad340fish can't wait to get ahold of you later and meet with you, hopefuly on a drag racing night , and check your truck out. I'm ready to start bombing and I want see what your truck has. :D

Lower ET's

Clark,

How much will lower AirTemps effect ET's?? I understand the power loss effects of Humidity, and air density/altitude. So I am just looking for a guesstimate based on your track experiance.

What about lowering tire airpressure for better traction? What pressure would you suggest? I had 50 psi during my runs. I do a lot of towing offroad - some dirt but mostly deepsand And if I run 12 psi in the deepsand I get great traction. I am guessing 35psi for the Truck style radial.

I had several people suggest launching in 4 wheel drive then kicking it out after a couple of gear changes. I am not convinced that this is a good Idea. Have you seen this tried? Here is some of my thoughts.

1. -Launching: this would have to be hard on the transfer case. Even with the HD model I think it is the weakest link in the HO/ETH 6sp drivetrain.

2. - With the 6sp combined with the bombing goodies I am kept very busy shifting. 4 shifts in the first 10 seconds!

3. - On pavement the drivetrain may start to bind making it difficult to shift out of 4x4. And it should be done during a power off phase of the run.

Floor it, Yeah it would be great to meet with you sometime. My truck is nothing special. Only thing that keeps it from looking total stock is the gauges. I am at the track a lot either racing or just watching.

KWIK

I wouldn't try the 4 wheel drive thing with a standard. With an auto it would be easier to get away with. Mopar Muscle(Which I haven't seen post in awhile for some reason) was doing that for a while and getting some great ETs from it. But I think it cost him an output shaft I am not for sure. I just ran my tires as I do on the street which is 50psi empty. With an E rated tire I don't know if PSI will help much or not. Drop your psi and go lay some black marks. They should be even all the way accross. Keep droping them until they start to get light in the middle and then go back up. Its hard on tires :) but it works pretty good.

I am not to sure how much outside temps will effect a diesel motor. But I know on my car its good for a few tenths when its real cool outside. Turbo lag should be reduced but that will just cuase more time spin.

alright here is a question for you guys afraid of using your 4wd for racing, after I mention why did you in fact get one if you are afraid to use it. Would it bother you to chain up to a bigrig stuck and you were on paved road? Then why would you not race in 4wd with nothing stopping you from going. If you would break somthing every time you spun all 4 tires that truck would be a p. o. s. in my opinion so do you think you will spin all 4 tires off the line at the track, and if you did do you really think it will break. I can tell you that I have broke only on tcase from racing, and the cv joint let go first, I also ran 12. 67 @104. 66mph in 4wd so if you think my standard 241ld tcase wasn't put through more than a hd can handle you should rethink your logic.

my . 02 cents

Adam, Did you have soggy Weaties this morning? :p

1. My truck spends more time in 4WD then 2wd. In the last two weeks alone I have towed over 15 stuck or broken vehicles out of the sand, Mud, Marsh land and many areas where any one with common sense would not even take a Military style tracked vehicle.

Three of them weighed over 40,000 lbs. (Diesel Pusher motorhomes & a Provost Tour bus)

Big Rigs ? only towed 2 in the last 6-8 months. And yes when pulling them off the sand shoulder onto the hiway I use 4 wheel drive untill they are on the road and rolling.

It would not be good on the Tcase to continue down the Paved road for 50 to 100 miles with it locked in part time. The binding of the drive train is very hard on the bearings & gears not to mention the Heat it would build.

The difference in starting a heavy load and Drag racing is ofcourse the way you apply HP. When towing I generally do not revup the engine and Drop the Clutch. I start out much like your Auto with some slippage. ;) :p

You where at Tulare Ca when I was towing with my 01 4X4 with less than 5,000 miles on it. Did it look like I was afraid to use it?

1st pull smoked clutch bigtime!! I had tried to slip clutch and launch in third. (Wait wasn't that your Idea!);) :p ;)

2nd pull 42,000lb pulled 241. 6 ft.

3rd pull broke hitch trying to upshift while pulling.

If you have been under the ETH from the bellhousing back to the hybrid Dana 80 the weak link does appear to be the aluminum Tcase. It will be great if a cv or ujoint is the first thing to break. I would think they are less expensive to fix and could probably buy parts at the local parts store and fix at the race track then still be able to drive my truck back home and to work as I don't trailer my truck around it is my sole vehicle and money maker!

Back to my first post. While shifting thru the gear changes I would think it would be difficult to also shift out of 4x4.

If I left it in 4x4 would the time saved in launching be greater than what time you would lose from the extra drivetrain drag and binding. Did you run in 4x4 and 4x2 to see what difference it made with your (6,000lb under valved 2door half wornout trailered p. o. s. ) CTD truck. :D

It is good to hear from you I hope your are having a better day. :D Later Kurt

:) Kirt just trying to get you guys to use everything you've got. I got you thinking right.

I think you will run at least . 5 seconds faster if you use 4wd. It is alot busy when you do use it for launch then when you shift to 3rd or 4th push the tcase lever into 2wd. By doing this(taking it out of 4wd) you gain about 1 to 1. 5mph on the top end and very minimal et. I know your not afraid to use 4wd to race. :) It scary, but very effective.

I'm glad to hear your still having fun with your truck Kirt.

Have a good day.

Adam,

Your truck was the first seriously "Bombed" truck that I had the pleasure of watching at tulare. During the Pulls your truck was definately the strongest and you also broke a hitch but that was from Massive torque not from the jerk of a gear shift like mine. Since then my goal is just being able to run fast enough and have enough torque to stay close enough that I can catch the "Fully tested & used parts" as they fly off your truck!

:p ;) :D

Later KURT:)
