I'm getting ready to order westach combination gauges. I like the idea of more gauges in the same spot.

My question reagrds the transmission temp probe. They offer 1/8 and 1/4 npt or one to wrap around the dipstick. The latter sure sounds easier, but must not read as acccurately. Anyone have experience using either. If the dipstick thing works reasonable well, I would prefer not to drill.

Where would you drill by the way.

Also does anyone know of drawbacks to these gauges either in performance or looks or longevity?

Has anybody seen better prices for these than Geno's offers?

Thanks, Dave

I've yet to order my guages, so obviously I'll be watching this thread closely. However, I was under the impression that the Westach guages did not match stock as closely as the DiProcols do. Hopefully if I am wrong, then someone will correct me here.

Dave,

A year or so back there was a good article in The Register about gauges. I seem to remember that the Westachs were considered good quality instruments and that they also had very good lighting. I know one guy that uses them and he says that it takes some getting used to, but once you do they are easy to read.

I am going on 4yrs. with my westach combo gauge, great product and zero problems.

I've also added transmission temp and fuel pressure, 4gauge on the pillar.

Great Product except for the combo gauge lighting :( could be improved.

Geno's prices are prolly the lowest around.

I agree The lighting is not a match, your choises are red, green and white. I chose green and the dimming is not the best, It's brite, not as brite and off. the gauges them selves are great quality. Westach is primarily into aircraft gauges,so it's good stuff. Geno's was the lowest I found.

thanks for the input, anyone care to comment on the transmission probe? I would love to just wrap the dipstick, but something tells me that is not the preferred method.

Dave

If you get the 1/8" probe you can buy an add on transmission drain plug (B&M $10). Just drill a hole in your trans pan and install the drain with the probe mounted in it instead of the 1/8 drain plug. It's not as good as being in the hot coming off the trans but it's better than wrapping it to the outside of the line IMO.
