11 pm last night,5. 2 centered 6 miles south of Chelan, could feel the Seattle one more though. Maybe one of the volcanoes is waking up...

Glad you guys are OK. I was 1. 5 miles from the epicenter of the 1989 7. 2 quake in Californicate. You all probably remember it as the World Series quake #ad
I had rushed home from work to catch the game on TV. I turned on the tube, went to the kitchen and grabbed a beer. I sat down and just as I cracked the beer the quake hit #ad
No s#!^, that's a true story - That was quite a beer #ad

Earthquake Shakes Pacific Northwest
The Associated Press
Feb 28 2001 3:27PM

SEATTLE (AP) - A powerful earthquake jolted the Northwest on Wednesday, sending people fleeing into the streets of Seattle and Portland, Ore. , cutting power to thousands and dropping bricks onto sidewalks.
Twelve people were treated at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center, three for serious injuries, spokeswoman Marsha Rule said. There were no other immediate reports of injuries.

The magnitude 7. 0 earthquake hit at 10:55 a. m. , according to the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. Centered 35 miles southwest of Seattle, it was felt across the region and into Canada. The dome of the Washington Capitol had a visible crack.

``Everyone was panicked,'' said Paulette DeRooy, who was in an elevator descending from the 15th floor of a Seattle building when the earthquake struck. She and several others scrambled out and onto a fire escape.

Screams erupted at a nearby hotel, where Microsoft founder Bill Gates was addressing an education and technology conference. He was whisked away as his audience bolted for the exits. Some were knocked down by others trying to get out and overhead lights fell to the floor.

The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was closed and the tower and other offices were evacuated, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman William Shumann said.

The FAA ordered a national ground stop for Seattle, which means no flights to the Northwest's largest city were being allowed to take off anywhere in the country. The center handling air traffic in Washington and Oregon, near Auburn, Wash. , was operating on backup power.

Utility officials estimated that 17,000 customers in the Seattle area were without power.

In Olympia, about 10 miles from the epicenter, a crack was visible in the Capitol dome. Legislators, government workers and visiting school children flooded out of the Capitol and other buildings. The state Senate was in session.

``The chandelier started going and the floor started shaking. Someone yelled get under the table and so we did,'' Sen. Bob Morton said. ``The sudden violence let us know that this was a bad one. ''

Cracked plaster, gilt and even paintings fell from the walls, but Morton said he saw no sign of major structural damage.

Officials were particularly afraid the Capitol dome would collapse and people linked hands as they walked down the marble stairs under the heavy dome.

``If that rascal had tumbled down, it would have been all over,'' Morton said.

Seattle's popular Pioneer Square neighborhood, site of recent Mardi Gras riots, was damaged. Bricks from buildings were piled up on sidewalks. Structural damage also was reported at Bellevue Community College, which was shut down for the day.

``I thought a car had hit my building,'' said Sam Song, who owns a restaurant in Everett, 30 miles north of Seattle. ``Then the ground started moving around. ''

In downtown Portland, 300 miles from the epicenter, office buildings swayed for 20 to 30 seconds. The Multnomah County Courthouse was evacuated and employees were gathered in a park across the street while officials inspected for damage. Michelle Noonan of suburban Lake Oswego said the quake was strong enough to move things around in her house.

``Everything was shaking,'' Noonan said. ``It knocked over a wood pile outside house. Books fell off the shelf. ''

Earthquake magnitudes are measures of earthquake size calculated from ground motion recorded on seismographs. With each scale, an increase in one full number - from 6. 5 to 7. 5, for example - means the quake's magnitude is 10 times as great.

A quake with a magnitude of 6 can cause severe damage, while one with a magnitude of 7 can cause widespread, heavy damage.

A 5. 0 quake that struck the Puget Sound area on Jan. 28, 1995, was described as the strongest to hit the area in 30 years, since a 6. 5 earthquake struck April 29, 1965, injuring at least 31 people. In 1949, a 7. 1 quake near Olympia killed eight people.

The Northridge quake that struck the Los Angeles area in January 1994 caused an estimated $40 billion in damage and killed 72 people. It was a magnitude 6. 7.

Dane,I was in Oakland about an hour before that one,was driving down 101 near Gilroy when it hit,I thought I had a flat and pulled over. By the time I stopped it so did the shaking, checked my truck out, fine, thought maybe I'd been driving too long didn't even think of a quake. Finally found out about it when I hit Santa Barbara

I was right in middle of this one, driving on I-5... . still cleaning my shorts out... . ran me off the road... . like being on a wild rollercoaster... .

back to work--

Quite a ride this morning. I was at work in Bellevue just north of I-90. The building is suppost to be built to withstand this kind of stuff, it felt like we where setting on a piece of plywood that was sitting on a bunch of marbles.

Definitely an E-ticket ride. #ad

I don't like seeing people get hurt but love seeing mother nature assert her power over us,helps to put us in our place,we're not so high and mighty after all.
There's a Historic Monument south of me that marks where a 7. 2 earthquake in 1871 caved a cliff in and blocked the flow of the second biggest river in the US,the Colombia, for 20 days. You've got to wonder what the people downstream must have thought in the days before fast information when a half mile wide river slowed to a trickle and wonder even more what they thought when the dam busted loose.
We've got it easy now when a hurricane can be predicted a week in advance, and now even a volcanic eruption. I like natural disasters and hope to die from one rather than by cancer or car crash.

Sorry for the editorial, but that's the way I feel when it starts shaking.

The news I''ve been able to get is kinda sketchy, but so far, it appears nobody has died, and not many injuries. They will be a while fixing up, though. The Washington State Capitol Dome has a crack in it, for instance.

I sure hope all the TDR folks in the Seattle area are ok... If anyone hears of any TDR member needing help, let us know, ok? We'll try to help.

I got an email from John Treibel but it was sent only 20 minutes before it hit, hope all is OK at his place. Also the NW BOMBer's big convergence zone (Rob Hanson's place) isn't too far from the epicenter, and he is in Mexico right now. He's got a couple of nice horses that hopefully didn't take off when the ground started to rock and roll! Those who've been there know he basically lives on a ridge with a long, steep hill on the north.

I've been in a couple good rollers, in San Bernardino for the June '92 Landers Quake, and in Jan 1995 one in Auburn which was a decent little shaker at 5 on the R-scale. They are quite exciting!

I was at the top of a rolling ladder inside a building on Bainbridge Island, don't even remember coming down the ladder, it was really rockin and rollin!!!!
What a ride!
Bill's right, just think if we didn't know about earthquakes it would have seemed like the world was going to end.

Caleb

I hope every one is safe. I was in the 89 Oakland quake and was also in LA on a business trip when the 94 quake hit there. These are not any fun at all! Hope there are no after shocks!

Stan

Shake, Rattle & Roll BIG TIME! I was sleeping when the earthquake hit... I had only gotten to sleep maybe a half an hour before it hit (I work at night so I catch a nap when I can #ad
). We suffered no apparent damage but the house sure moved around. It sure scared the heck out of my five year old daughter though. #ad
We went over to check on Rob Hanson's place (He and his wife are in Mexico) and everything seemed more or less ok... a few things were broken inside their house and part of the ridge cap on the front peak of the house was lifted several inches. I hope that doesn't mean serious structural damage.

It could have been worse, much worse but thankfully it wasn't. #ad

Yeehaw! And now for the best part; after hearing that they closed work down for the remainder of day shift, second shift AND third shift (which is what I work), to check for damage to buildings and machinery etc. I decided to work on my Ram for the next five or six hours in the nice weather. #ad

Hope all you Northwest folks made it through the shaking okay, that is a pretty respectable Richter number. I have lived just a couple of miles from the San Andreas fault all my life so I feel for you. Be prepared for some aftershocks over the next few days.

For those of you who keep your truck in your garage, take a good look what you keep in the rafters above your truck. Back in 1994, the Northridge quake, I forgot about the Volkswagen engine block I had stored in the rafters above my truck. Down it came and broke the windshield. (Don't worry, I was a Ford guy then)

I moved to Mt. View CA from calm New England a few days before the 89 quake. Not fun!

I left Puyallup about 2 years ago, I wonder if they had any problems with that Semiconductor plant I worked at. (Lots of nasty stuff to make chips)

Still can't reach friends out there to check in with them, but suspect they are ok.

(sure is nice to be back in New England)

Good Luck to all!!
