The rear seals on my d-80 are shot. To any one who has replaced them, is the axle tough to get out? Do I need to drain the pumpkin or can they be pulled one at a time keeping that side of the truck high to save the gear lub. Just changed it recently and dont really want to do it again. Thanks for any ideas. Bill

I just replaced a rear axle seal on my '95. No problem, just do it like your service manual says. You will need a socket the fits the nut that holds the hub on.

Bill, I had mine out not too long ago, and I did like you said. Pulled one at a time with that side jacked up a little higher. Didn't lose any fluid. A different time I pulled both out with the truck level and lost about a quart of fluid. Mike

I replaced both the seals on mine, new brakes shoes, etc. Did them both at the same time. Lost maybe a cup or two of gear oil, not enough to worry about. BUT... yeah, do lift 1 side up and do it, and none will leak out. Socket you need is 2 9/16" I think. For the D70 it is anyway. Napa has them, in there OTC line of tools. It's around $30.

Might check Quad 4X4. They have a couple kits with everything needed for the fix, including one with an upgraded reusable better, faster, smarter nut. Kits come with video instructions. Hey, beats watching American Idol.
