right now my truck has a k&n filter in a modified stock housing

kinda nice cuz the way i have it set up cold air is getting rammed staight into it

i live in so cal so it never rains here

but everyonce in a while i will be towing back from a race and hit a desert shower

question is - what would happen to the wix filter is it got a little wet?

is it a true paper filter?

changing everything else under the hood, thought about building a differnt system. ,. .

thanks, don

One word, OuterWears. :)

Wet paper filters don't flow well. Dry paper filters after they get wet don't flow well. ;)

dont they just make the socks?

who's filter do i use if i build my own system?

you know whta i mean...

4" tube ran into air box who's filter do i put on end of tube?

or will a outerwears fit the k&n?

don

Ford had to make a "down snorkle" on some recent gas motorhomes, The direct intake was taking in water in heavy rains and killing the filter to the point that engine wouldn't run well, or at all

I made up a ram air deal on my Cummins Mo Home, right out front, that worked fine till it rained the filter full one day. It was an enclosed filter open at both ends, looked pretty shot inside.

Ran an intake duct down to behind the bumper and put an aluminum shield around the opening. Seems to work.

Yep, water resistant filter socks. I am partial to the Fleetguard BHAF AH19037 covered with the Outerwears prefilter.

Mount it behind the headlight and all I have seen to date, even in enough water I was hydro planing, is a mist that the prefilter handled without problem.

One thing about the Fleetguard is even partially plugged it will flow enough air for most situations.

I believe they make a sock for the K&N also. However, you will NEVER find a K&N on my trucks, especially in a dry dusty environment. ;)

alan, most of the guys with dust getting by the k&n's and ending up in the tube... it didnt come thru the filter

serious, the stock hose is loose on filter - you have to wrap masking tape around the base of the filter or it wont seal

then you have to make sure it has oil on it cuz you are right, dry they dont work

i'll check into the fleet guard filter monday

thanks

Quite true, if the neck isn't sealing its a problem.

However, the CFM rating is low enough that once you go over 25 lbs of boost you are outstripping the ability of the K&N oiled filter to do its job. Other types of filters suffer the same fate also but usually at higher flows.

Since it is the oil film that does the filtering, once you get enough pressure differential across the filter it starts sucking the oil, and the dirt, thru the larger areas in the filter. ;)

K&N's seem to work fine in stock and close to stock systems, wetter environments, etc. Not in the dry desert which a good share of the west is blessed with. Way too many cases of dusted engines and tell tale dust in the intake tubes. Even the stock box filters don't fare well here. Every 10-12k on them where a BHAF with a prefilter is good for 50-60k in extreme conditions, more in better conditions.

Big paper filters equals high flow and good filtration. :)

we used to race off road (my brothers did)

they used to do just that (replace)

i told them to throw the thing in the washing machine and re-scotchguard

lol

probably work fine...

hey alan, why is the fleet guard paper filter twice the price as the wix paper filter?

is it twice as big?

don

No, they should be about the same size.

Probably because:

1. Its a Fleetguard

2. IIRC, filtration is better at higher flows with the Fleetguard

Didn't thiunk there was that much difference. I had better check again and see what they are. What did you find for prices?

Look up a thread of mine from 2002-03, entitled "K&N 'Filter' ". It has a pic of an intake hose, sealed with silicone at both ends, and with K&N filter grease on the rubber seal on the open end of the filter. Dust still came through it, enough to write my name in, in <10Kmi. I didnt have any issues with it in Colorado, but when I moved to MO, it started getting dusty inside the engine. Went to paper, and all has been well so far. I figure if I can hold the (K&N) filter up to the light, and see pinholes of light through the media, dirt is also getting through. Bottom line- K&N=junk in a turbocharged engine.

Not true in all cases my friend... my intake plumbing is clean;)

I also clean and oil my K&N each year.

i think some of that is determined by how much injector and what turbo you put behind the filter...

i ordered a paper filter today, and a sock for the stupid thing, so i guess i am a member of the bhaf club

whoopieeee

lol

make it a great night!
