Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) WH1C vs. HX35 for hybriding?

I'm just wondering what the differences are if any reguarding these two turbos? I'm going to be hybriding a turbo probably next month and I can get a WH1C with only 90K miles on it to do instead of my HX35 with 190K miles on it, and I was wondering if it would be better to use the turbo with less miles



Had a friend in KY tell me that it would basically be the same either way, but that there would be more machine work to do on the WH1C if I went with it.

we built my HX40 out of an H1C



the only question is: does the H1C have the same turbine wheel as the HX35?



as long as it's the same, there's no reason not to... I prefer the v-band compressor clamp on my H1C compressor over the snap ring clamp!

That won't matter I'm pretty sure. Its going to get replaced with a 60mm wheel when it gets hybrided anyways.

i thought i read somwhere that the h1c doesen't breathe as well as the hx35, in other word it has a lower choke point than the hx35, or is that problem taken care of sice you are going to be using a different turbine housing?

well, most H1C's came with 18cm or 21. 5cm housings, so I would imagine it'd be higher... now, if the COMPRESSOR side is the restriction, I could certainly see that...



the question is: are the turbine wheels different? they're certainly the same major/minor diameter because housings interchange between the two, but if the pitch of the blades is different, you would want the one that flows better.



everything else interchanges... I used an H1C center and compressor housing to build my HX40

is the hx40 compressor housing size the same as the hx35, and just have a larger compressor wheel, or is it completely different? i savin up for a pdr hx40 and i don't know much about the hx40's ecxept that they have a bigger compressor wheel, but i also hear that the stock hx40 shaft is weak and tends to break

I believe the compressor housing is the same size... but I don't know for sure, we machined my H1C housing to fit the HX40 compressor wheel... the HX40 shaft is the same size as the HX35 or H1C shaft... but the wheels are bigger... more intertia = more shaft breaking inertia...



but I contend that you can "drive around" the weak shaft... don't snap off the throttle at full boost, etc. etc. and it oughta give you years of service.

thanks for clearing that up forrest. i will probablly need the prd turbo cause they use a stronger shaft, and i tend to snap my throttle shut alot(some jerk always pulls out infront of me!)

Keep in mind that the WH1C is different from an H1C... .



The WH1C is pretty much the same beast as an HX-35... . the compressor dimensions are darn close. The H1C has a smaller compressor section.



The WH1C comes with a 12cm² wastegated housing... not a 18cm² or 21cm² turbine housing.



HX-35 turbine housings are a bolt-on affair with the WH1C.



I've had good luck with my WH1C... with both the 12cm² wastegated and 16cm² non-wastegated turbine housings.

so which is better? the H1c or HX35? or is a matter of pros and cons and parts from one are better than other and therefore worth mixing and matching them? I ask because I now have a H1C in my possesion that has the 18cm* non-wastegated housing on it that is ready to mount to the manifold but I also have an HX35 on the truck now. So I'm just now starting to look into this deal.

A WH1C is better/bigger than an H1C...



The WH1C is pretty much the same as an HX-35... . but I think it's more durable... with a slightly less efficient compressor section.



Use the HX-35 or a WH1C... . I wouldn't use an H1C if I had a choice between them...
