Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) lift pump pressure question

Dont know what to think as of right now. I installed a new lift pump along with Banjo Bolts on my pickup today thinking I could cure what I thought might be a weak lift pump. Symptoms prior to this were my FMS box reading Low Fuel Pressure if I romped on it with more than 25% fueling added. The light would read almost instantly. I hooked er up to a mechanical gauge and had 14 psi at idle and with 20% fueling on the box I could pull it down to 1 psi! Bought a pump Friday from Cummins in Denver for $130. 00 and popped it in this evening with my new Banjo Bolts. Took it out for a spin and same darn thing! Low Pressure light on with fueling added!! :mad: I installed all Banjos but the one going into the VP housing where my fuel pressure sending unit is. I need a male to male adapter to attach my sending unit hose to the Banjo Bolt so had to leave that one stock. What the heck might my problem be?? I got this sneaky suspicion I just wasted $130 on something that isnt the culprit to the problem. :mad: Maybe I'll mount my original lift pump at the tank and run a series of pumps. What do you all think I should do?
 
Make sure that blue wire goin' to the sender coming off the fmc isn't grounding out on ya! I left mine disconnected and rely on the PE pump and guage to do the readings for me.



As for a lift pump TqT had two bad out of the box BACK TO BACK!



That's something to think about too.
 
:Edit: I am using a PE 4200 fuel pump with ddIII's and with the blue chip on drag mode I can only pull down as far as 12 lbs of fuel pressure. Yeah I would ditch the lift pump alltogether.

Man I am gonna be fuming if thats the case about my new lift pump. Installing the pump wasnt really that bad but priming the engine took forever!!



Thanks for the tip on the Blue Wire. I need to get this new pump on mechanical gauge and see what it is really doing. I am giving more thought to the series pump idea. If I install the original pump next to the tank and run a series I should have about 26 psi at idle and hopefully low teens WOT. Doug @ ADT has been running his at this level for about 30k without problems with high pressure going into the VP, maybe thats the ticket to keeping that fussy little sucker happy. :D



ToolManTim Taylor- did you have problems with your FMS and stock fuel system? Is that why you upgraded to the PE setup? Also, I still havent fiquired out what the numbers on the upper right hand corner of the FMS screen mean. At idle mine reads between 14-16 and goes up as more throttle is applied. Chip at Blue Chip tried to explain this to me about it being the frequency the VP remains open to allow fuel in, I couldnt understand it, can someone explain what this is in laymen term?

I hate to say it, but I still think that your problem lies with the banjo bolts and the stock fuel lines. Get some AN connectors and quit making that lift pump work so hard. :D :D



So curiosity has the best of me. You only paid $130 for that pump?? I figured it set you out at least double due to your deal with the wife. Come on now... admit it, this pump is costing you about $260... LMAO :D (sorry, buddy, I couldn't resist)

Yep, your right, it really did cost me $260! Crappy part of it is I think I might have just wasted it all! :mad: hmmm... . I wonder if Cummins will take the pump back????

You may as well keep that new pump. I would get a fuel pressure tester hooked up and verify the FMS readings, and do the same with your old one. If the new one is showing bad, take it back to Cummins. Otherwise, odds are that you are going to need a replacement eventually. This is presuming that both pumps in your possession are good. If you ever decide to upgrade your fuel pump system with a PE4200 or such, I'm sure that you will be able to find someone to buy your old ones from you.

I agree with K Arts, go to Cummins and get the 8 buck pigtail and move the pump down by the tank on the frame and up-grade your lines and fittings... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... banjo bolts work good on lawnmowers :rolleyes:

I like the application for Banjos :D Good one Kevin! I did get the pigtail as I wasnt certain if I needed it, turned out I dont. I read your page on how you did your tank. It is about 80% clear to me, do you have any pictures of the pump setup so i can get that extra 20%? Did you get your lines from Aeroquip?

There are alot of companies that handle the supplies but I got all mine from Jannetty racing. I have no pics but it is toooooo easy, the fuel comes out of the inbed tank and right under that is the pump and from there its to the filter and on to the vp

I just ditched the pumps alltogether and went with the PE setup as those pumps "Can pump Sand" and are built with the upmost in quality. I wanted the longevity mainly. When I was running the pusher setup I could pull those down to 6 psi with the box on kill.





I never used the numbers I have the RPM in it's place. Tim tried to explain it to me and I still am #ad
