well i got the 16sq housing and turned up the ol pump on my 93 ctd 4x4!!! what a difference from the 18sq housing. did not have to turn the smoke screw at all. pyro and boost were all cool!!! man what a truck!!! want to put a tc in asap. going to kill the evil KDP with th tst kit. maybe some DD3'S OR PODS? what do you guys suggest for injectors for towing a 8000 trailer ?thanks again for your invaluable input:D :D :D LET THE BOMBING COMMENCE!!!!;)

intake and ehaust

:) jlight, air in and air out are as important as fuel and timing. Pod's are good and I won't go into filters, your choice, just better than stock. Mine runs real good pulling 9,000 lbs, although I could use a jake. Good brakes help. Fix that smashed pipe above the differential. Good luck. Tim

Not to start a injector war but I was told by a few performance shops that for towing POD's were not the way to go. High egt's and not a real smooth running injector. I've got a 42H. P. industrial injector from Advanced Diesel Tech. Bully Dog also carries them. Lot less money then Pod's also. Just another injector to choose from.

As it has been said, air in, air out. a better exhaust is a good first choice. Rip Rook has or can get them for our first gens in 4" or 3 1/2". As far as the injectors go, I've tried quite a few types and found the DD3+'s from Dynamite Diesel in Monroe, wash. to be the best injector for power (30hp more than POD's) and cool temps and cleaner running and smooth.

Granted, they're expensive, but you get what you pay for and more.

All right you guys,,, lay off the "air in air out"... I got copywright on that..... geeeezzz you can't take your eyes off anyone these days... ... ;););):D

Remember that along with air in/out, you need to take into account your transmission, what gear you like to REALISTICALLY tow in, what boost pressures you will run, are you towing at altitude, mostly sea level/flats etc... .

As for injectors, I don't have experience with the ones that Dave notes (DD's)

I have run both the POD's and the 185 Bosch injectors.

In general terms running a 16cm housing using either the POD's or the 185's will work.

The POD's give you more raw HP but they will also require some 'easing off' on the pump if you want to have good all around temps. (by that I mean you may not be able to use all that the POD's bring to the table due to smoke/temps/mileage etc. )

The 185's will do a good job, and still allow a bit more 'pump fueling' and still give you good temps in general.

Stock exhaust- poor, no matter what altitude/hp rating (the same effects are compounded by stock intake filter. )

High altitude- less airflow/boost causes richer running and more smoke + higher temps.

Stock timing- generally more smoke, poorer response on throttle.

Tweaked timing- better response, less smoke, complimentary to larger injectors, better burn of fuel charge.

Pick were you want your power and were you would use most of it a majority of the time...

All the above are true so I wont go into that air thingy. I have towed with my PWs and no pump adjustments quite comfortably - also 8000 lbs. In 1998 I took a 11,000 mile trip with the above setup and was able to use my cruise control with the exception of two places the entire trip - and that was with the Getrash transmission. The two "hills" I refer to are Cabbage Hill and Bridger Pass. That year Cabbage Hill had the east bound lanes closed for paving so we went up the west bound side. I passed everything towing anything and topped the hilll at 60 mph in 4th EGT's 1100 or so. I was able to leave my truck in 5th and the cruise control on going up Lincoln Pass in Wyoming - 8000+ feet. :) :)

I just put in 185hp bosch injectors, (already adv. timing). boost went from 15-15 to 20-21. big difference. egt around 900-1000 under hard pull. stock housing and exhaust. 10,000lb 5r. trans temp seems the big concern on long pull, not sure how far to let it go.
