How Hard to install Transgo?

Are K & N oil filters any good? I want to change my oil this weekend and don't want to drive far to get a filter if possible. I can locally get K & N oil filters for $9. 99. I can also get Wix and Purolator. I'll probably order from Geno's soon, the set they offer. Thanks, Herb

Herb...

K&N oil filter posts rank right up there with oil and transmission discussions/wars. Some love 'um... . some don't. Do a search and you'll have hours of reading. I assume you're talking about a drop-in filter in the factory box? Some have complained that it's difficult to get a good seal between the box and filter edge; therefore you have leakage.

Also, $10 for a K&N life-time filter seems suspicious to me... . not a flame, I've just never heard of them priced that low. The cleaning kit alone costs that much. If it's a knock-off, I'd pass.

Isn't Sandy near Portland? (Don't have a map handy) Cummins NW is on Swan island with Fleetguards less than $10

GAmes

Sandy is about 30 miles from Swan Island. I'll have to keep them in mind. I just didn't have any time to drive that far during work hours and wanted to change my oil safely at 3K. Thanks, Herb;)

Herb,

I'd say just order the fleetguard units from Geno's. you will have your stuff in a few days. I've never used K&N oil filters, only air filters, which are not in my truck either.

I have been using the K&N Oil Filter since new.

I like the hex nut on the end so I can use a box end wrench to loosen the filter from below. I never have used a strap to do that.....

I saw the cross section of the filter on the box and it seems like it would do a good job. I use synthetic oil now and I go 5,000 on filter and 10,000 on oil changes... ...

This filter is $10 and the POS competition F*** is like $4 or $5 not in my truck!!! anyway, I have had good luck with them for 3 yrs now..... thats just my exper.

K & N oil filters

K & N oil filters are just like all the others in looks. After so long, you just unscrew and toss. They do have a nut welded on the bottom that makes changing easier. I just was wondering if they are safe, not plugging up the oil nozzles inside the engine. ;)

K&N OIL filters

I have been using K&N OIL filters in my other rattling, rough idling, and noisy vehicle for a year now after the shop recommended them. Only a Harley has more expensive parts than Dodge/Cummins. and more stressed oil. They both are picky about it. HD even says diesel rated oil is ok for emergency usage. So I would say it ought to be ok if no fleetguard is available. Don.
