Quick Hello

Thanks

i posted in the political forum about the situation here and how the news percieves the situation- that was ranting- this is sincere, thanks to all the individuals and corporations who have stepped up to offer supplies, money and your time- contrary to what's on tv, it is greatly appreciated by the people here. one thing i ask is that people make a mental note of whose helping (business wise) and try to support them. it may be you next time. thanks from myself and my family daryl s.

Slideshow from the Washington Post. Beware, it's pretty graphic.

Here is a slideshow from the Washington Post. It depicts the plight of animals and the challenges facing rescuers. It's pretty strong.

Interesting quote from Slide 23 "The only reason we agreed to leave is because they promised they would bring our dogs"

Looks like someone defaulted on their promise :(

Thanks for the link JGann, very interesting pictures that give a small vision of what is going on down there.

Yup. My girl Sabrina is my family. -

I wouldn't have left her. No how, no way. I totally understand these people not wanting to leave their animals.

The most tragic is when some have had to choose between their animal and a family member like a child or an ailing parent. Then you have to do what you have to do for the family, say a prayer for your devoted friend and hope for the best.

What a tough situation for all involved.

Pets

it's funny to me. whether you got a puppy from a box in front of wal-mart or saved for years to buy him/her. when a dog is in your home you may or may not live for them, but be assured that they live for you. just the way my dogs act when they hear my truck a block away, or the way i sit on the couch at night with two heads in my lap (wife's been kicked off couch by doberman :-laf ) i cant imagine having to leave them here. i said before, everyone's deal is different and i'm not chastizing people for what they did, but i can tell you i cant think of what could cause me to leave them to fend for themselves. i guess i'm just lucky to be in a position where i dont have to chose. and yes, sleeping in walmart parking lot with 2 dogs and wife in ext cab ram is interesting to say the least.

Legislation would require pet to be included in evacuations.

I really hope this bill becomes a law:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/22/katrina.pets.ap/index.html

The HSUS says that the Texas authorities are being great about accommodating household pets for Rita evacuees. Apparently they learned the lesson of Katrina that we can save human lives if we don't make them choose between their pets (family members) and evacuation.

Even with the progressive thinking by Texas, an official law stating that states have to provide shelter space for families with household pets would making things uniform and save lives. I can't believe that it would be such a big deal to just cordon off areas for pet families -- it's not that big of a deal.

Not without my mutts

If the need ever arises, you may find me parked outside the shelter, but I'll be sleeping in the truck too. In better company than most inside.

I'm sure many of you have seen one of the variations on this:Dogs go to heaven

I live quite remote, about the only thing that might get me is a forest fire. However as a result of Katrina, I have 2 large duffle bags packed that will hold me for 2 weeks, including trail food. And my to Boys (2 German Shepherds) have 2 duffle bags, 1 with a large bag of dry food, the other with cans of food. If your making plans for the future, be sure to include your pets needs.

i just had a customer who works for the humane society in n. o. . she said it was way worse than anyone could imagine-now they are not letting them retrieve anymore animals (there's too many being sheltered already) so they find them and bring food and water to them- some are still locked in the house waiting for the family to return. many drowned in thier own home because the owner left food and water and wished them luck. as for the ones who have been recovered- the odds of them finding thier way home is slim. btw- i didn't know that the local (state) humane society and the national humane society were two different operations-she said the national guys showed up for a few days, took some heartwrenching pics for the press, laid claim to all the good being done and then left- :( . . nice guys aint they?
