What additives do you use with Bio?

I have a suspected injector issue that I can't seem to fix. Dealer had another truck come in with the same symptoms and they did all the tests, ran injector cleaner, re-tested 4K later. Seems to have fixed the problem in that other truck. So I dumped seafoam in the fuel filter can and dumped rather large amounts of Diesel Kleen in the tank. Truck seemed to run better with the Diesel Kleen and started acting up immediately after filling with B75.



I've been running B20, B60 and now B75 since February. I thought Bio was supposed to be a kick-butt cleaner?



I had previously ruled out the fuel becaue the "miss" was so intermittent and the fuel constant. Now I'm starting to wonder. I'm gonna try running B2, which all fuel in MN is, for a couple weeks to see what happens.



Has anyone run into anything similar? What did you use to clean things up?



Dad's '03 has been running B100 from the same supplier for the last few months and he has had no issues.

I am also interested in an answer to your question. I suspect that biodiesel might need an additive to get rid of water that collects in the fuel tank. Also and bugs that might start to grow.

The bio my fuel guy uses is already mixed with a complete additive package, and so is the #2... "PowerStroker" brand for the #2, not sure what's in the bio but I would assume the same. It's supposed to be pretty good stuff, the bio that is. I'd like to try some from another source and compare the two.

I don't understand what additives you would add for Bio. I understand putting in something for cold weather but not during the summer.

I have noticed that if I run B20 in mine and add some powerservice in the gray bottle, it runs like you are saying and in the mornings it will spit and sputter on startup along with black and gray smoke, then clear up.

But if I run #2 with powerservice, then add about a little more than a quarter tank of B20, that truck runs like you wouldn't believe. It almost doesn't sound like a diesel. No clatter at all.

Even if i run just a straight tank of B20 it does not seem to like it to much for some reason.

I'm gonna have my fuel guy fill me up with #2 which will take me back down to B15 or so. I'm thinkin' these '04. 5's and newer don't like the bio as much as the 03's do. Dad loves B100 in his '03.



I ain't givin' up on bio, just maybe coming back down to earth a little.

What issues have you noticed while running B100 in the newer Cummins?

I haven't noticed any problems running B100 in my rig (04. 5)... I've run pretty much everything up to 100% B100 at times (depending upon when/where I fill up). All i've used as additives is the standard dose (instructions) of Power Service.

I put in 30 gal of #2 today, which should have brought me down to B15 or so. No change. If anything it was a little worse than yesterday.



I'll probably try #2 again tomorrow and see what happens. Really getting sick of this problem.



My next project is to drop the tank and check out my relatively new in-tank lift pump for an obstruction of some sort. That's about all I can come up with.

Do you tow/haul much? From what I hear, Cummins doesn't like low-load living - doing much better if you stick 10k behind the rig and drive it like you stole it... Some of the 'injector problems' I've heard of have been fixed that way.



Some decent combustion temps may be needed to clean up the injectors?

I read somewhere, that >B70 in a HPCR system could cause "polymerization" that can clog things up. Other comments were that "polymerization" would only happen if the Bio was oxidized, from being old / poor quality / poorly stored and wasn't from the HPCR. I'll have to try to find the source...



For this reason I have limited myself to ~B50. I have had no problems with anything from B5-B60. Seems quieter and smoother particularly at B20 and up.
